Trump trade war targets Ivanka's competitors

The arrangement highlights yet again the immense ethical problems involved in Ivankaís role in her fatherís administration. Like Donald Trump, she has refused to divest from her private holdings while employed in the White House.

From her position as a senior adviser, she can influence major policy decisions and then profit from those same decisions.

China announced tariffs on American goods in response to the initial announcement on Trump tariffs. In a tit-for-tat move, heralding a trade war, the Trump administration announced tariffs on some Chinese goods.

The administration created a list of goods that would be excluded from the tariffs. Citing a desire to have ďthe lowest consumer impact,Ē the list includes goods like clothing and toys. Ivankaís company specializes in clothing and holds trademarks in China, so it would avoid the tariffs.

But many of her competitors arenít so lucky.

While the clothing companies themselves will not be hit by tariffs, the Washington Post reports that much of the machinery used in production of footwear and clothing will be hurt. Particularly, those companies manufacturing their goods in America will be impacted.

Rick Helfenbein, chief executive of the American Apparel and Footwear Association, told the Washington Post, ďThis would directly raise costs on domestic manufacturers and impact our ability to grow Made in USA.Ē

Conveniently, Ivanka Trumpís clothing company makes most of its products overseas. While her father has made loud proclamations about returning manufacturing to the United States, she has profited for years from foreign labor.

So companies competing against her line of clothing will face increased costs if they manufacture goods in America, while Ivanka Trumpís company dodges the tariffs and wonít see her costs go up because she outsources.

This is what I don't understand about this whole tariff thing. He's making it more expensive for people to make things in the US by going after raw materials like steel and aluminum. How does that help manufacturers in the US?

It's his simple-minded approach to everything. He thinks nothing through. And his supporters eat it up. Very few things are as simple and straight forward as Trump makes them out to be. But it appeals to a certain segment of the population, unfortunately. Oh, and his supporters will just call it fake news that Ivanka's company dodges the tariffs.

When it evens out it will be better.

There are bound to be ups and downs during the process.

    What's complicated here for you?

You sell something here we can sell something there.

    Nice and simple.

    This is what you want.

China say, "for every item you sell here we can sell five in america and for every item you sell we charge you 5% of the cost, for every item we sell you give us 5% of the cost, fair deal yes?"

Liberals are like yep, sounds good, lets do it.

After all, we don't want a negative image and make our stocks drop a little, that would be bad.

Tell that to the soybean farmers. The tariffs haven't even started yet and they're taking a bath. Those ups and downs represent people, and IMO farmers who did what they have been told for decades was the right thing, to embrace globalism and make it work for them, are getting screwed because some union guys in the rust belt are desperate to hang on to jobs.

I'd be pissed if it were me.
