China offers US possible trade concessions

President Xi Jinping promised Tuesday to cut China’s auto tariffs and improve intellectual property protection in possible concessions aimed at defusing a worsening dispute with Washington over trade and technology that investors worry could set back the global economic recovery.

He promised progress on areas that are U.S. priorities including opening China’s banking industry and boosting imports but didn’t address key irritants for Washington such as a requirement for foreign companies to work through joint ventures that require them to give technology to potential local competitors. Private sector analysts saw Xi’s speech as an overture to help end the biggest trade dispute since World War II. It has fueled fears the global economic recovery might be set back if other governments are prompted to raise their own import barriers.

Xi tried to position China as a defender of free trade and cooperation, despite its status as the most-closed major economy, in response to Trump’s “America first” calls for import restrictions and trade deals that are more favorable to the United States.

The dispute is likely to end “with a concession from China,” said Larry Hu of Macquarie Group in a report.

I think it’s pretty impressive that these countries are now willing to deal.

Mr. Trump FINALLY focused on the right target-----CHINA------the country that has NOT been playing by the rules. Hopefully Mr. Trump has stopped attacking our ALLIES, the countries such as Britain, Canada, Germany, Australia, South Korea, Japan. Those countries have PRECISELY the SAME complaints about China that we do. We NEED them on OUR side to put more pressure on China. Initially, Mr. Trump was thrashing about like, well, a bull in a china shop, attacking our allies even more than China, with his steel tariffs for example, as we import very LITTLE steel from China.....

IF he's finally getting a bit smarter, that's all to the good, and high time, too.

Certainly will be something the president will be able to take credit for. Many have said China has had unfair advantages for years but never did anything. Kudlow did say they would deal if you played their game.

I do think as I have said before its his way. He goes for the most extreme thing and negotiates back. Trudeau said NAFTA talks are going well too. But again Trump began them by saying, we will get rid of NAFTA. Does seem to bring players to the table.

Speaking at a business conference, Xi made no direct mention of his American counterpart, Donald Trump, or the dispute. He promised progress on areas that are U.S. priorities including opening China’s banking industry and boosting imports but didn’t address key irritants for Washington such as a requirement for foreign companies to work through joint ventures that require them to give technology to potential local competitors.

Someone read a lot into Xi speech.

Un-named analysts do not speak for Xi.

Nothing has been done. Talk to me when the deal is done and signed. Trump and Chi talk smack, talk is cheap and means nothing.
