Volvo opens first US auto plant

Volvo Cars, the first major automaker to abandon cars powered solely by internal combustion engines, is officially opening its first plant in the United States.

The Swedish carmaker aims to make 130,000 hybrid or all-electric vehicles a year at the South Carolina factory, once it reaches peak capacity.

Volvo is officially opening the plant Wednesday in Ridgeville. The first redesigned S60 sedans should roll off the assembly line this fall. ompany officials say 1,500 people should be working there by year's end and 4,000 by the end of 2021, when the plant is scheduled to also make Volvo's new XC90 SUV.

Limited market here at best but then they are a small company. And I'm guessing South Carolina because unions are weak there?

Yep, like VW, they will be able to hire American workers for half what they pay their own workers. Welcome to third world shitholery...

Right to work state and access to parts and suppliers that all moved down south years ago. NH lost the Mercedes Benz plant years ago because at the zoning meeting they asked "is this a right to work state or will it be soon?" They checked us off the list immediately.

    Here, argue with Forbes:

You are talking about Americans getting jobs. Sure they aren't paying what those UAW jobs paid. That resulted in those jobs going overseas.

Does not affect the fact that German auto workers make twice as much as American auto workers, now does it?
