I do hear that the women of Venezuela are simply torrid.

I do sorta like the sound of that.

We could copy them in SOME ways, right?

Gee. Those sound like practical degrees. Maybe we should feel sorry for the students getting degrees in Outdoor Recreation, Gender Studies, and Medieval French Romantic Poetry.
lol I know. A decent chemist can get a 30K bonus right out of college currently. A rhetoric major? Not so much. My daughters prof told them, "get a decent degree, you get a decent wage and a signing bonus, get a liberal arts degree and you get a job at Target." Certainly set a lot of kids straight thats for sure.

Wasnt Carly Fiorina's degree in something like medieval history?

Of course, she was a successful failure.

English majors were doing very well straight out of college in 1999-2000

She walked away with $25 million for being "a successful failure", and boy oh boy, I call that "nice work if you can get it"!

My sister worked very closely with Carly at HP. Liked her at first, came to loathe her over time. Told me she was the most self-centered person she had ever met, would brag about her personal jet to lower level employees, who of course would never be able to even dream of such an extravagance.

When they fired Carly, I called my sister up on the phone, to get her reaction. And she started SINGING to me, on the phone!

She was singing, "Ding dong, the witch is dead! The wicked witch! The witch is dead! Ding dong, the wicked witch is dead!!" Ha HA HA !!!

I kind of wish democrats would get off the higher min wage kick and focus more on training and/or guaranteed basic income. Min wage jobs are quickly disappearing due to automation and likely are to be gone in another 10 years or so totally. People dont realize how fast automation is coming now and they stubbornly refuse to acknowledge it. These people will be minimum waged out of a job and then be pissed.

Yeah, a friend who had made his career at HP (it used to be that kind of company) decided to retire early under her leadership.

Do you think a guaranteed basic income is gonna fly with republicans?

I worked for them for 13 years, saw the changes coming, and took a severance package when one was offered, and went back to graduate school. My sister worked for them for 28 years. For her, it WAS her career, and she eventually became a Vice President of Human Resources. I don't think she ever made the REALLY big bucks, but she did very well for herself, considering she never had anything more than a Bachelor's degree. She was always MUCH better than I was at networking, and perhaps social skills more generally. I never tolerated fools gladly, and it frequently got me in trouble.
Thanks from labrea and Ian Jeffrey

As you might well guess, training and education have always been my schtick, or better, my clarion call to America, for almost 40 years now. I've been preaching that America needs a giant Sputnik Shock for just about that long. And I have come to be more and more pessimistic that anything of the sort will happen in time. It is already too late, in my opinion. America is near the breaking point.
    Thanks from Friday13 and bajisima
