More than a third of small businesses cant fill open jobs

Certainly true where I work. We are offering all sorts of perks and bonuses and are considering offering a new car. Yet almost no resumes.

The number of small business that aren't able to find enough workers has matched the highest level ever recorded.

The percentage of small companies not able to fill open positions hit 36 percent in June, according to the NFIB Research Center, matching the survey's record high set in November 2000. (The data goes back to 1973.)

“Labor markets are very tight, for both skilled and unskilled workers,” wrote William Dunkelberg and Holly Wade, chief economist and director of research at NFIB, respectively. “More firms are looking for workers than workers looking for a job. And the hiring strength is in industries that pay well: construction, manufacturing, and financial services.” The difficulty in finding qualified workers comes at a time when small business optimism is booming with the survey's main index posting its sixth highest reading ever. For the month of June, the index came in at 107.2, down 0.6 from May. Since December 2016, the index has averaged an "unprecedented" 105.4, well above the 45-year average of 98 and rivaling the all-time high of 108 in July 1983, the researchers said.

The findings represent yet another indication that the U.S. labor market is either at or beyond full employment following Friday’s Department of Labor report on the employment situation.

I would hope so. We knew there just isnt as many young people out there after the boomers. Plus so many boomers held on for so long. Our head engineer is 72 and he is retiring with nobody to take over. Looking for someone with 20 years experience is a daunting task. Plus they never brought in someone he could mentor and prepare. Now the shit hits the fan.

Sounds like even more reason to overhaul our immigration policies.

Yup sure does. Automation is going to be accelerated now too. Just read a local article about how community colleges cant find enough professors and lecturers so they are going to share ones from around the country. Basically a few professors will Skype or some sort of e-teach to a hundred thousand students all over.

20 years experience? Best lure would be a good retirement package I would think.

I don't mind them increasing automation as long as it happens organically, but I sure the fuck don't want to hear that the government is helping them do this like they did with outsourcing.

I know right? But in a lot of small companies, they are structured so they have a senior person, middle person and a few younger grunts. But a lot of times the middle and the younger ones move around, leave to have a family or move away. So nobody is ready to move up. CNBC had a report that in 2012 GE was retiring over a thousand workers a week and only hiring 50. Now they are in serious trouble. Dumb asses.

Thats interesting. I bet companies will be able to get tax breaks for computers and capital equipment. So in a sense they will get govt help for automating.

I would rather they get a tax break for helping their workers get advanced education and move from unskilled to skilled.
