JCPenney closing 33 stores, laying off 2,000 workers

JCPenney announced they will be closing 33 stores and laying off 2,000 workers.

It seems like all the stores and places I remember as a kid are ceasing to exist. We will be left with nothing but Walmarts and Dollar Stores.

Do you have any Belk's, Macy's or Kohl's near you? They are similar to Penney's

The end result of "free market" is always monopoly, then the game is over.

The first escalator I ever saw was in a JC Penney.

Can't recall being in one since though.

Yes we have Macys and Kohls. But they are relatively new. I still remember going to Penneys growing up. It had a smell and an old fashioned elevator with an operator. Just memories.

Retail businesses are having a VERY tough time....as Internet sales continue to grow.

Most of the successful retail stores today are far more focussed (Best Buy, Dick's Sporting Goods, etc.) JC Penny's and SEARS are from a completely different age (Remember...they started off as primarily CATALOG sales. Ironically close to what we have today, via the Internet...)

But, they were "GENERAL" stores, in that they provide a very wide range of productsm specializing in nothing.

NOTE that Walmart DOES "specialize." In CHEAP. NO their products are not always cheap and below standard, but, many are, and, they buy in MASS.

JC Penny and SEARS could survive, but, they need to adapt to the new markets. They have done so before, so I'm not going to count either out.

But, the days of the MALL are drawing to a close, unless more is done to make such venues more than simply "shopping..."(AKA the Mall of America, which, I think, is still pretty damned successful...)
    Thanks from sparsely

Yup, more closed this year, and more businesses will close this year. It's over, five years of QE instead of an economy fucked us up.

I heard on CNBC that most of the stores on the list are in states that have or are talking about minimum wage increases. Apparently there are several other big store closings related as well. Ruby Tuesday just announced.
