Cleveland Set To Open First Hospital Based HS

A new high school, embedded in a hospital, is set to open in Cleveland in the 2016-2017 school year.

The Lincoln-West School of Science & Health will combine a traditional curriculum with a hands-on, interactive learning with professionals in a hospital setting.

It is a collaboration between The Cleveland Metropolitan School District and The MetroHealth System, which Metro believes is the first of its kind in the country.

Students will have a ten-weeks on, three-weeks off schedule, where they spend time at both MetroHealth's main campus and at Lincoln-West on West 30th Street. Ten teachers and one principal will be on staff and about 150 students are expected to enroll in its first year.

Biology, English, Spanish, Art, Physical Education and Health are part of the curriculum. In addition to hitting the books, students will do lab work in MetroHealth and shadow its clinical staff plus attend staff lectures.

MetroHealth stated the mission of Lincoln-West is: “To prepare students for post-secondary opportunities and careers. We will immerse students in the fascinating world of modern science, health and medicine through rigorous project based curriculum, active learning labs and relevant workplace and community experiences.”

A formal vote to approve the new school is scheduled for the CMSD Board Meeting on June 28.

This is fucking genius! I am so astonished the CMSD came up with the idea, but I am so glad they did!

    Congratulations to everyone involved!

I agree 100%!! This is a terrific idea. I love this article. Lincoln-West is a good HS...I have had many college students who graduated from there. This is a very innovative way to incorporate VoTech. Thanks for sharing.

If it works, why not replicate it? Embed a HS for the arts in our Museum of Art and our Symphony Hall? Put a HS in City Hall, for kids who want to be lawyers, etc.?

This is such a great way to get the kids excited about learning, and build them a network of professional adults who will aid them in their futures.

    DAMN!

    That sounds really cool!

How are they going to decide which students to admit? Will it just serve as the "main" school for it's area, or, will this be more like a magnet school?

My bet is they will have to limit their enrollment, because this may be a VERY popular school.

We have one, based around a ZOO. DAMN, but I would have loved to attend either one of these schools.....

    IDK. Maybe academic excellence?

The zoo school sounds cool, too.

Well, I think our local school at the zoo, is just for those who would typically go there. (They don't do a LOT of zoo stuff, but, they do have some special classes, I think.)

We do have a "magnet" school that is for high academics. Kids have to submit to a "lottery" system just to get in, but, they are thinking of adding another one.

I would be nice to have several "high academic/specialty" schools, but....once we start doing that, people will begin to question if we are spending too much for the "smarter" kids.

    Which is a legitimate concern.

I wold like to see a lot of "specialty" High Schools, some with technical studies, some with medical exposure, some with legal studies, etc.

(The irony here, is that no one bats an eye, if schools vie for TOP ATHLETES. But, OHMAGAWD, if we start going out of our way to create top environments for those who excel on the academic side....")
