Parents are the key to a kids success and if they care and teach their kids to care, a public school is easily as quality an education as any other.

I very much believe in free compulsory education up through and AA degree.

As for how to improve public education; the first thing is to bring back the vocational classes so that kids can get a break from academia and engage their hands and their minds into areas that might give them practical interests for the future. The second thing is a stricter disciplinary policy that only leaves some sort of daily educational police custody as an alternative. Thirdly, cell phones and such are to be placed in lockers for the day and parents are to contact the office in case of emergencies: it worked for generations before that and will work for generations after.

That's start. I could go on but it's too much.

ps: sorry for the delay, but I'm not getting all of the quote notifications, so I have no idea how to find out who's replying.

I think your ideas about vocational education deserve attention. But that doesn't do much for the first 3/4ths of the K-12 curriculum, elementary and middle school. That's where most of the learning takes place, actually. It's certainly where the achievement gap grows.

Vocational education is reliant on structural change in the economy. For example, there has to be strong unionism to ensure wages more closely reflect productivity. Without that, we have education feeding into social immobility: with cultural and social capital ensuring that the middle and upper classes 'win' and the working classes are left with vocational training peanuts
