I agree, and maybe for some its a huge deal to graduate HS, to me its expected of you. You should graduate HS. It didn't feel like some great accomplishment. I guess graduating college was another I was supposed to. Getting my Ph.D however felt like an accomplishment, but didn't seem extremely hard or I ever doubted taht I would.

And realistic. the real world outside of HS will swallow you and eat you up. College can do that to you. IN fact simply have a HS diploma doesn't put you ahead of the pack. Even a college degree doesn't do that. it's realistic, and likely the kids were pampered, especially these days. You need to be educating kids on real life, so they can handle it.

Getting a degree to use as a job credential is the wrong reason to get a degree.

    IMO.

For instance, I have an advanced degree in comparative religion. It'll never ever get me a job. But I understand human belief better than just about anyone on the planet. That's because I didn't just take the "prescribed course of study", I actually included math and philosophy and psychology and all kinds of interdisciplinary areas the pertain to the human brain more than they do to anyone's religion.

The part I understand real well, is the belief tree. The thing that starts with fundamental assumptions, and grows according to "logic" that spins out from the roots. It doesn't help me make widgets for XYZ corp, therefore it doesn't help me get paid. BUT, when my boss comes at me with some kinda cockamamie excuse for why I shouldn't get a raise that year, I can show him how smart I really am.

(Sometimes I do that by quitting my job on the spot, but that's a whole 'nother story).

I never went to college, but I do understand how to make widgets for XYZ corporation. Fat lot of good it did me. I haven't been able to find a widget-making job for almost 30 years.

Nothing will change. Children will still be pampered and coddled till they are in their 30s and parents will still be puzzled as to why they can't survive in the real world.
