In the first round, both Macron and Le Pen were nearly equal in the polls, between 24-28%. Not the same in any respect for the second round.

    There is little ground for Le Pen to gain for the second round, as Macron supporters will be energized, centre-left voters of Hamon or Melenchon who do not wish to see Le Pen in office will back Macron, and centre-right voters of Fillon will summarily also back Macron. The only voters Le Pen can pick up are those of right-wing candidate Dupont-Aignan, and the nationalist Eurosceptic faction of Fillon's party. It's simply not enough, and the polling reflects that. It has reflected that for months.
    I see.

    Thanks for the update.

    Apparently things move really slow in the UK.

    It could be as much 18 months.

    I'll go with the prediction of William Butler Yeats:

    Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
    Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
    The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
    The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
    The best lack all conviction, while the worst
    Are full of passionate intensity.

    The Left have a history of disregarding and tossing aside referendums approved by a majority of voters. They are not very democratic are they?

    On a referendum, wait until June to see how brexit plays out, it might be a surprise for all you "scorched earth" types.

    The referendum on Brexit was a non-binding referendum. This means that the government isn't obligated to carry out the results of the referendum.

    The country as a whole voted one way, but if you break it down by region, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and London voted to remain in the EU. This creates an issue when maintaining the union. Scotland has already called a new referendum on independence to be held next year over the issue, and unionist forces in Northern Ireland got trounced in the last election.

    This means that the reactions to the vote are still very nuanced, and that minds could be changing quickly. Anecdotally, the mother of a friend of mine (who is a British citizen) voted to Leave, but later regretted the vote remarking that she didn't think the 'Leave' vote would pass. She just wanted to voice a negative opinion to Parliament.

    If Pro-EU forces can manage to cobble together a coalition for June, and oust the Tories from power, I would hope they revisit the idea of leaving at all.
    Thanks from Friday13
