    Le Pen vs. Macron

France could face its own 'Frexit' in the future after far-right leader Marine Le Pen and independent centrist Emmanuel Macron beat the two main parties to go head to head in the upcoming presidential elections.

With 30 million votes tallied so far, France's Interior Ministry says currently Le Pen is leading with 23.4 per cent of the vote followed by Macron with 22.8 per cent. Initial polls shows Macron was in the lead.

It has been assumed for some time that the centrist, social liberal, and Pro-EU Macron, and far-right nationalist, and isolationist Le Pen would be the two candidates going into the runoff.

Even after this recent terrorist attack that far-right elements cynically hoped would boost Le Pen to the front, Macron still holds a commanding lead over Le Pen for the runoff.

In polls taken since the event, Macron holds an average of 63% to Le Pen's 37%. Le Pen's momentum peaked a long while ago, while people are uniting around Emmanuel Macron from centre-left to centre-right as a strong voice of reason and unity for France. He will keep France in the EU, as it should be if either France or Europe want to be a power in the world.

    For the EU! Stronger United!

That's what the polls were saying but, at the moment, Le Pen leads Macron in the primary.

Could it be, as we saw in the UK, that not as many French want to stay in the E.U. as the polls predicted?

You can only win at the first round with 50% of the vote +1. Those polls I referenced were for the second round of voting, with only Macron and Le Pen as options, rather than the very wide field of candidates for the first round. In the first round, both Macron and Le Pen were nearly equal in the polls, between 24-28%. Not the same in any respect for the second round.

There is little ground for Le Pen to gain for the second round, as Macron supporters will be energized, centre-left voters of Hamon or Melenchon who do not wish to see Le Pen in office will back Macron, and centre-right voters of Fillon will summarily also back Macron. The only voters Le Pen can pick up are those of right-wing candidate Dupont-Aignan, and the nationalist Eurosceptic faction of Fillon's party. It's simply not enough, and the polling reflects that. It has reflected that for months.

If a Pro-EU coalition can oust the Tories in June, hopefully never.
