Trump Didn't Know He Couldn't Do a Trade Deal with Germany Alone

I know he's incredibly ignorant, but apparently he's also dense. God, he's embarrassing.

President Trump did not understand that the US cannot negotiate a trade deal with Germany alone and must deal with the European Union as a bloc, a senior German official told The Times of London.

"Ten times Trump asked [German chancellor Angela Merkel] if he could negotiate a trade deal with Germany. Every time she replied, 'You can’t do a trade deal with Germany, only the EU,'" the official said.
The conversation led Trump's administration to realize that it was more vital to US interests to nail down a trade deal with the EU than one with the UK post-Brexit, a source close to the White House told the Times.

Trump's new stance is similar to the one adopted by former president Barack Obama, who warned that the UK would be "at the back of the queue" if it followed through with Brexit.

He supported Bexit even though he had no idea what it meant. He never even knew what and how the EU works. How can any of you still support this idiot? He's really bad for this country. And don't tell me how awful Obama was. He wasn't. He was well respected around the world and very knowledgeable. Trump is one of the most ignorant public figures I've ever seen. As I've said before, the depth of his ignorance is bottomless. How can any of you possibly think this is okay? How is it okay for the president of the United States not to know basic things like this? You can keep pointing out that he can depend on other people to advise him, but I don't think anyone realized that he doesn't know this. How can you advise someone if you don't know what they don't know. Or, are they supposed to assume he knows nothing? Which is apparently true. We are so screwed.

Itmakes me think to an aphorism:" The more you are far away from things, the more you believe that very simple solutions do work.... When you are close to things, you know that you have to address complexity...." A decision maker cannot relyon other people's understanding.... He needs to build a vision fitting the reality he is facing.... In the case of President Trump he has little interest to know and understand what reality is. His guts are better than reality....

It's truly frighting how uninformed he is when it comes to foreign policy..

President Trump admitted he did not know much about NATO when he first called it “obsolete” on the campaign trail last year, he told the Associated Press.

“They had a quote from me that NATO's obsolete. But they didn't say why it was obsolete. I was on Wolf Blitzer, very fair interview, the first time I was ever asked about NATO, because I wasn't in government. People don't go around asking about NATO if I'm building a building in Manhattan, right?” Trump said to the AP, according to a full transcript published late Sunday.

“So they asked me, Wolf ... asked me about NATO, and I said two things. ‘NATO's obsolete’ — not knowing much about NATO, now I know a lot about NATO — NATO is obsolete, and I said, ‘And the reason it's obsolete is because of the fact they don't focus on terrorism.’ You know, back when they did NATO, there was no such thing as terrorism,” Trump continued.

The 67-year-old North Atlantic Treaty Organization does in fact have a focus on counter-terrorism and issued its first formal declaration on the issue in 1980. The alliance also invoked Article 5 — which commits NATO countries to help any member state under attack — one day after the 9/11 attacks on the U.S in 2001.

But yes I doubt this thread will get much traction with the MM crowd. Hard to admit you got suckered I guess

I was thinking the same thing about what he's said about NATO now that he knows what NATO is actually about and what he said about health care being more complicated than anyone knew. He is the single dumbest president we've ever had. That's the only conclusion any reasonable person could come to. How do his supporters continue to defend him?!
