I think 50% is a huge turn out in the US.

News is saying May met with the Queen this morning to form a coalition govt. They said she will look to the Northern Ireland votes to combine with conservatives to form a majority. What are the Northern Irish considered? Are they independent or another group?
    Thanks from Madeline

The Democratic Unionist Party are the political wing of various unionist protestant paramilitaries that still operate in Northern Ireland. Guys like Provos. I think I've heard that the DUP are pretty much socialist as Jeremy Corbyn who was branded a communist by the conservatives.

This situation is undoubtedly going to create chaos in NI. Theresa Mayhem indeed.

It's with the DUP, which are in opposition to Sinn Féin in Northern Ireland, wanting N Ireland to stay in Britain. DUP is traditionally representing the protestant population and SF the catholic.

UK election 2017: full results | The Guardian

    Overview (from The Guardian)
Theresa May has lost her parliamentary majority after calling an election to strengthen it, and has made a deal with the DUP to form a new government. Jeremy Corbyn's Labour party increased its tally by 31 seats. But an anti-Tory coalition is still not viable without the DUP. One constituency is still to declare. The count was suspended in Kensington after three recounts failed to establish a winner.

George Osborne, ex-Cameron's Chancellor has a new job editing the London Evening Standard. It's hard to see down in the bottom left, but I swear he's smirking even more than usual!

British democracy in action. This pic show the declaration of the result at TM's Maidenhead constituency. She's on the far left, (of the pic!) central is "Lord Buckethead" The chap in the stetson is the Monster raving Loony Party, and to the right is Elmo! There were several other fringe candidates too numerous to mention.

Saddest story of the night was the Communist League candidate who stood against Jeremy Corbyn. He polled only seven votes. You need ten proposers to stand!

You have had some outstanding newspaper editors over there! I gather George Osborne is in this tradition?

I will have the read the London Evening Standard now. LOL; that makes like 6 British newspapers.....mainly to get decent US news coverage!

For anyone who isn't already acquainted, I give you the great newspaper editor and humanitarian, Sir Harold Evans:

In Conversation with journalist, author and thalidomide campaigner, Harold Evans

To my knowledge, there are no such people editing newspapers in the US now. Barely any in the 20th century; you can easily argue Kathryn Graham risked very little in Watergate.

Today? The Boston Globe. The NY Times, when they aren't busy trying to run the propaganda campaign de jure.

Not excited about the Chicago Tribune or the Washington Post anymore.....the fight seems to have gone out of them.

We are paying a very high price for allowing our investigative journalists and editors with any guts and integrity to become artifacts of the past.

The problem of May is that she focus on appearance. she wanted to be a new Iron lady but with only a superficial determination which does not go into the guts. She offers a look but what is behind ? At least no real vision going beyond a posture. On the contrary Cobyrn was himself and anyone could relaize that his concerns were real ones and that he did not intended to play games just to please people...
    Thanks from Leo2 and Friday13
