I love my government Medicare, with a dollop of Healthspring, so do millions and millions of other seniors, in fact, you would be hard pressed to find any seniors that hate Medicare. I would like to see everyone in the country covered by Medicare their entire lives, then we would not be the only industrialized nation on earth whose citizens have to fear their medical bills and have millions of medical bankruptcies.
Thanks from April15, labrea and Blueneck

Actually, the health care coverage problem offered by government workers is Obamacare-compliant.

I guess no one on the right wants to discuss Medicare.

Medicare as it currently exists should be means/asset tested. It has long-term funding problems and most of the country's super-rich are seniors or near-seniors. We don't need to be buying all their medical care with public dollars from a financially strained program.

Ironically though, expanding Medicare to cover everyone is actually necessary at this point. A federal monopsony in the purchase of health care services and products with some strict cost-containment oversight by a transparent regulatory commission is probably our only hope, long-shot as it might be to think the federal government would begin controlling costs after so many decades of enabling cost overgrowth in this sector. The current system does not work, and Obamacare is ultimately nothing but a set of mandates and subsidies used to keep the failing for-profit health insurance scheme afloat for a few more years.

Yeah, that's a way to complicate things and grow government.

Medicare has been a very successful program. Seniors today are outstanding when you compare before Medicare (1965ish) I don't think too many realize that hospital and private practice reimbursement is over 50% Medicare and Medicaid. It has been forecasted several times, when the tail end of the baby boomers reach Medicare age, we will see approx. 70% of reimbursement to medical facilities from Medicare and Medicaid. 18 years ago, it was rare to see a senior in their 90's as independent and healthy as they are now. Now, I see successful joint replacements on patients 90 years old. I measure the success of Medicare on quality of life and longevity and we are seeing this with the seniors.

There is no "government insurance plan." It's a regulation of private insurance and the requirement that everyone get private insurance that meets or exceeds certain guidelines. All government workers get insurance that meets or exceeds those guidelines, so in effect all government workers DO have "obamacare for insurance."

    Or...
