Scientists have discovered a new form of non-genetic inheritance, showing for the first time that offspring can resemble a mother's previous sexual partner -- in flies at least. Researchers manipulated the size of male flies and studied their offspring. They found that the size of the young was determined by the size of the first male the mother mated with, rather than the second male that sired the offspring.

This confronting idea, known as telegony, dates back to ancient Greek times, but was discredited in the early 20th Century with the advent of genetics.

To test it out, UNSW Australia scientists Dr Angela Crean, Professor Russell Bonduriansky and Dr Anna Kopps manipulated the size of male flies and studied their offspring.

They found that the size of the young was determined by the size of the first male the mother mated with, rather than the second male that sired the offspring.

"Our discovery complicates our entire view of how variation is transmitted across generations, but also opens up exciting new possibilities and avenues of research. Just as we think we have things figured out, nature throws us a curve ball and shows us how much we still have to learn," says lead author Dr Crean.

Now THIS is interesting. Do bear in mind, though, that this study was based on FLIES. Mammalian reproduction is vastly different.

It's how the author interpreted the study...

    It may be a possibility.

There is definitely an ick factor involved.

You DO understand, I certainly hope, that a woman does NOT become pregnant every time a man FUCKS her.
    Thank God!

That's true from the male perspective, as well.

    Maybe even MORE so.

Because when they autopsied the brains of women who had never even been pregnant, let alone with a male child, they STILL found male DNA cells prevalent in the female brain.
    @BigLeRoy

What do you think of this comment?

The pregnancy history was unknown for all but a few subjects in the current studies, thus male Mc in female brain could not be evaluated according to specific prior pregnancy history. In addition to prior pregnancies, male Mc could be acquired by a female from a recognized or vanished male twin [41]–[43], an older male sibling, or through non-irradiated blood transfusion

    No. I'm offering some balance.

Is the study wrong? If so, how do YOU know? Did you do your own study? ]
Did I make a judgement somewhere? No.

Listen, I get that this is an uncomfortable topic, but you guys are completely missing the boat, here. This was not the only study, the only evidence, nor the only one to reach these findings.
It's not uncomfortable at all. I'm comparing data. Is there a problem with doing that? I look for all points of view and I rarely make a decision on an issue until I have most of the facts.

Yes, I read those as well. Most articles are poorly written as the journalist's work is often vetted by the editor. The headline must be a 'grabber' even if it is false.
