ANd the larger companies often buy companies that started from nothing from investors taking the risk. Many big pharma fill their pipeline by acquiring ocmpanies that have a drug in development.

THe people that say that have no idea what goes into developing a drug. You would be amazed that there are even drugs that come out with how many failures there are and how much time and money goes into it. And even if everything works, another company might have made a drug that is slightly better, or only needs to be taken once a day vs twice, and then you get none of the market
Fine. Let them make a profit. But why must it be a profit of 850,000%?
    Thanks from labrea

I dunno. There's no provision of Obamacare mandating drug coverage, as far as I know.

Whats the point of the treatment if the people who need it, cant afford to pay for it out of pocket, or afford the insurance to pay for it?

Medical research has become an increasingly global endeavor and investments by other countries, particularly in Asia, are eroding U.S. leadership. In 2004, U.S. medical R&D spending represented 57 percent of the global total. By 2014, the U.S. share had fallen to 44 percent with Asia – led by China, Japan, South Korea, India, and Singapore – rapidly making up ground and increasing investment by 9.4 percent per year. If current trends continue, the U.S. will be overtaken by China as the global leader in medical R&D in the next ten years. China has already surpassed the U.S. in terms of the size of its science and technology workforce and global share of patents for medical technologies, and is closing the gap in published biomedical research articles.

More, and more, we are yielding leadership to China.

Cuba has developed treatment for cancers that we could benefit from.

Big pharma is so deeply entrenched in the medical industry and medical schools. Think what their disgusting advertising bill must be. Psych drugs are a big business and they want everyone medicated for life. Need a new disease, make one up.

Hold on, nearly everyone was required by law to get insurance. Remember that was taken care of by the PPACA.

Cuba pays their doctors about $75 a month. Think that would work here?

How many of these treatments do you think that they are going to sell? Maybe ten? There are literally only 1,000 - 2,000 people that have the condition that this drug treats. That is why it is so expensive. Your post demonstrates utter ignorance, as usual. They are not going to make an 850,000% profit. They are likely to barely cover the costs for research, development, production, legal fees, salaries, advertising, regulatory compliance, etc. They only have a window before generics of this will be allowed.
