    Tinder says otherwise.

You're a little confused as to what actually causes STDs.

If your post was a joke, then fine. You seemed to be saying that phones actually cause STDs. I wondered just what level of scientific illiteracy I was dealing with. There ARE Americans with shockingly high levels of scientific illiteracy, you know.

It was patently obvious, no need to get upset over. the irony here is you didn't understand that then are chiding mythical people on their "literacy".

You really don't understand how scientifically illiterate some Americans actually ARE, do you? There ARE Americans who think that the Earth is flat. There ARE Americans who think the Earth is hollow, and we are living on the inside. There ARE Americans who think there is no bottom to the ocean. There ARE Americans who think the stars are lanterns in the sky. There ARE Americans who were shooting at the hurricanes last year to try to get them to change direction. There ARE Americans who think that the Moon is the Sun at night. I could go on.

And I had no idea if you were one of those Americans. Shrug.

I don't suppose the "atomized" description works for Utah. There are other things that apply. For starters, a societal self-image that's based in rugged individualism is going to make it hard for people to reach out for help when they're struggling. And Utah does partake of that frontier mythology. They also have a lot of guns, which means that you'll have a higher proportion of times when a brief episode of suicidal sentiment will happen with a gun conveniently at hand, resulting in an actual successful suicide. The dominance of the LDS church may also factor in, to the extent it has crowded out more spiritually meaningful and supportive social structures. Religion is a pretty cold comfort for someone who is suffering -- especially Christian religions, which tend to focus on suffering as a character builder, while encouraging people to think of an afterlife. I've seen some stats that say that a rise in youth suicides could be correlated with the percentage of Mormons in each state (strongest in Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming). That could be because of the general spiritual emptiness of the faith, or more specifically its hostility to LGBT youths.

What are your thoughts, then, for why suicide tends to be higher in the South than in the US as a whole, and higher in rural areas than in urban ones? From my outside perspective, the small-town South looks spiritually empty and socially stunted, but perhaps it feels different from inside such a community. But then the question remains what's going wrong there.
