People being smart about family planning is NOT a "problem", man... I am saying this as someone who was horribly stupid about condoms and such as a teen back in Moscow, and as a result have another son growing up over there now, whom I only learned about years after resettling in Canada.

You SHOULD be very damn smart about having kids. If you cannot afford to properly raise and support one, do not conceive it, period. That's my opinion, anyway.

Is this a problem to be solved, a blessing to be enjoyed, or somewhere in between? What do you think?
    It's those whitey tighties.

The wife and I never had kids and never questioned why. We figured if it happened great but if it didn't so what.

I do wonder if the insecticide that made me sick when I ate a tomato in my teen years that had recently been dusted may have effected my fertility.

But smart folks will never be able to outbreed stupid people. Anyway, I think the better solution for that is to work on education and training for those that need it. I am sure that many more can be reached, that have been reached.

Getting back to birth rate... the article also mentions that women are staying in school longer, working more, etc... so it may not be a biological reason at all.
Especially if smart people are holding back increasingly.

More seriously, it's a wide scope issue.

Male sperm counts have been on a steady decline for like 40 years.

Like you pointed out, more women are opting for careers.

    More people are having abortions.

Well, the movie that I was thinking about was THIS one, and I thought it was kind of a crummy movie:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Children_of_Men

Even though it says the movie received a lot of critical acclaim, I certainly didn't understand WHY. I thought it was BORING.

Is that the one where some vaccine sterilized all the girls? There was one I cant remember the name of, (it was a bad movie) but it came out right after the HPV vaccine for girls.

The problem is more dire than we think...The “potential support ratio”—the number of people aged 20-64 divided by the number of people aged 65 or over— in many countries will plummet. In the U.S. the ratio today is 4.6, and it is projected to decline to 1.9 by 2100—fewer than half as many workers to support a retiree as there are now. These results suggest some important policy implications."

This time the study was of women of child bearing age. The fact that we're ageing as a society doesn't help, but that's not the reason for the low birth rate.

Here is the first sentence in the Wikipedia description of the movie: In 2027, after 18 years of global human infertility, civilization is on the brink of collapse as humanity faces extinction.

One of my BIGGEST problems with the movie is that they NEVER bother to explain what CAUSED this long period of infertility. Makes the whole movie implausible from the get-go. At least IMO.

Maybe US should pay people to have babies? It's what Putin does, look through this thread: More money for babies

Quite a few countries with low birthrates have tried various approaches of doing that, of subsidizing people to have more children.
