Women forced to have hysterectomies to remove Essure device

Is this the dangerous contraceptives Obama wants to pay for that puts womens lives at risk. Where is the FDA on this problem

Women forced to have hysterectomies to remove Essure device | News - Home

Nikki Morris has three very busy little girls at home in Haines City. Her husband works full-time and she stays home and home-schools the oldest while looking after the little ones.

Her pregnancy and delivery with her third daughter was a rough one, so she spoke to her doctor about permanent birth control options.

    [WEB EXTRA: FDA complaints]

The Essure procedure sounded like a convenient option, because it could be done in the office and had no recovery time, as opposed to tubal ligation which is more invasive.

The device works by inserting flexible coils into the fallopian tubes. Eventually tissue will grow around the coils causing a permanent barrier that blocks sperm from reaching the eggs for fertilization.

Morris said within four months of having the device implanted she couldn’t sleep, couldn’t eat, couldn’t stand and was in debilitating pain.

“I remember telling my husband every night before bed to please check on me and make sure I keep breathing, cause I would go to bed every night scared to death I wasn't going to wake up the next morning,” she said in an interview with Local 6’s Lauren Rowe.

During a phone call with her mother, Morris discovered she had experienced a childhood allergy to nickel and wasn’t even able to have pierced ears.

The Essure coils contain nickel alloy, and a warning is even given in the product’s information for use, or IFU, provided to doctors.

Morris believed the coils were poisoning her body and contacted her doctor.

“He said there was not enough nickel to be causing those problems,” she said.

After more months of pain, she ended up at Florida Hospital Celebration in the office of gynecological surgeon Dr. Steven McCarus. Dr. McCarus felt the coils had to be removed from her body to get her feeling normal again.

The only way to do that was to perform a hysterectomy and remove Morris’ fallopian tubes and uterus.

“I was 25 years old and had to have a hysterectomy, I don’t think that’s acceptable at all,” said Morris.

She is not alone. Thousands of women across the country say they’ve had to get hysterectomies after having the Essure device implanted. They have joined together on Facebook , and have the help and attention of consumer advocate Erin Brockovich.

This is why they have lawyers. I do not believe Obama is installing those devices or even knows about them.

He has authority over the FDA and they seem to be silent on this. This is not an isolated incident here is another new station from another part of the country reporting the same thing. When Brockovich is taking up the cause it is a serious situation

What a load of horse shit, but what else would I expect from you, @ptif219?

From the article you linked to:

Essure has been on the market since 2002. According to the manufacturer, about three quarters of a million women have it implanted.

FDA reviewing complaints with Essure after public outcry and ABC15 Investigation
And the FDA is not silent on this, but of course, digging out studies from 2002 to review, and going over new reports of problems, in the past few months, now constitutes them being silent on the orders of Obama to you. Oh, and looky here! The actual FDA report that the agency is supposedly so silent on:

    Essure Permanent Birth Control

You're hatred of Obama is palpably on display here, ptif. Sure you don't want to blame Obama and "his" FDA for approving this device in 2002, as well?

It would make about as much sense.

So the FDA doesn't care if women have to have hysterectomies or if they die. I get it sounds like the FDA does not care or maybe they are paid off. I guess Erin Brockovich is also not credible in your eyes

Oh, Jesus Christ, @ptif219! Where did I say any of the bullshit you just posted?

Who says the FDA is unconcerned, except for you? Who is suggesting that they've been paid off, except for you? And nobody has suggested anything about Brockovich's credibility - except for you.

Three sentences; three strawmen and lies by you. I'm shocked. No, wait, I'm not shocked at all. It's what you always do.

Let's look at the evidence, instead of your Obama outrage, shall we?

First, you claim the FDA doesn't care, or has been paid off. But what's your evidence for this? All of the links you've provided so far, show the FDA doing exactly what you would expect them to do. Locate and review the original studies. Collect and evaluate the new claims of serious side effects. Talk to the manufacturer. Get any additional studies they may have. Have the manufacturer change or increase the warnings of these side effects, to make sure that women are more fully informed before they make the decision to use Essure.

Now, let's look at all of the complaints concerning this device, shall we? There are more than 750,000 women who use Essure as their form of birth control. So far, official reports or complaints of severe side effects ("official" meaning women or doctors who either contacted the manufacturer or the FDA) total about 860 cases, or an adverse side effect report of 0.0011 percent. But let's say we take the number from the facebook support group of 3,700 complaints as more accurate. We are still only looking at an adverse side effect rate of 0.0049 percent. So, we're not talking even close to 1 percentage point in reported serious adverse effects.

And, in all of these reports, how many deaths have been directly attributed to Essure? None. There has been one death reported where the device may have been a contributing factor, but a death as a direct result? None. Zero, Nada, Zilch, Zip.

Want something to compare these numbers to? Let's talk Vioxx. At the time this pain medication was pulled from the market in 2004, there were about 2 million customers in the US. Of those, the FDA and a new Merck study, after a lot of reports on adverse cardiac effects, estimated around 190,000 heart attacks directly related to Vioxx, and out of that number some 65,800 deaths. And that was just in the US alone. There were more than 8 million Vioxx patients worldwide. Extrapolating from the US numbers, that's about 800,000 adverse effects, and 263,000 deaths.

It took 2 years to get all of the records and new testing done, before the drug was withdrawn from the market. And you're bitching because a few months have gone by, and heads haven't rolled at the FDA yet? Get a grip.

And for the record, I have nothing at all against Erin Brockovich. But, what is she going to do, that the FDA and the manufacturer of the device hasn't either already done, or can't do?

So no deaths means it is okay? The FDA did one study by an outside group and that is it? Women having to get sick and having hysterectomy is nothing?

Kep trying but this is no small deal and it has the attention of local news all over the country as I have shown. This is not the end of this and the FDA should do it's job and find this unsafe. Part of the problem is the device is made from nickel which m,any women are having a reaction to
