I think when we are talking about multiple murders of family members, public shaming is probably not going to be very useful....

If a crappy journalist can find this information then anyone can.

Wouldn't take more than a couple minutes for anyone to find it.

So no point in not giving the details.

Read this passage, and see if you can tell what's wrong:

The teen, whose name has not been released, is in police custody in connection with the shooting deaths of his father, Steven Kologi, 44; mother, Linda Kologi, 42; sister, Brittany Kologi, 18; and a family friend, Mary Schultz, 70, who was residing at the Kologi home in Long Branch, New Jersey, according to Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni and a statement from his office.

What. The. Actual. Fuck?!?! Soooo...they won't release the name, because he's a minor, but they will print the names of every single family member he shot, and the location, so that any half-retarded Rhesus Monkey with access to a computer can cross reference, and find the kid's name, within, like, five minutes. Really?!?! This is what passes for journalistic integrity these days?!?! I mean, for fuck's sake! If your gonna make it that easy, why pretend that you give a shit that he's a minor, and just print the kid's fuckin name?!?
They may not be able to legally print his name, what is NJ Law on printing the name of minors accused of crimes? (I don't know IS THERE A LAWYER IN THE HOUSE)

There's no hard and fast rule that a minor who commits a crime, or is suspected of doing so, may never be named. The community is legitimately interested in who assassinated one of the families there. If it wasn't a family member, the fear is it was a random home invader, since anyone who wanted to murder one of the adults for "ordinary" reasons like sexual jealousy would be unlikely to kill everyone who was home.

IOW, the community cannot have desperately needed information unless the arrested person is identified, even If that person is under age 18.

Okay. But, then don't pretend that you're withholding the information, and backdoor his identity. Just be up front about it, ad release his name. The way this article went about identifying the shooter just strikes me as rather shady.

    Mr. czernobog,

Yes, how dare they release the actual facts of the event.

I mean, the report should have read:

A teen was arrest in the deaths of people, who may or may not be his relatives in an unnamed town in a state which may or may not be on the east coast of a country which may or may not be in the western hemisphere, according to someone who may or may not be an official near where the incident took place. Or not.

Who gives a rip whether this young killer remains anonymous or not? The story was accurately reported: The police didn't release his name.

    Exactly.

This issue isn't about whether it's right or wrong to name the minor.

It's about "don't act like it's wrong and then do everything in your power to help people find out the name of the minor anyway."

If they believe it's wrong, then they're in the wrong because they practically named him.

If they don't believe it's wrong, then they shouldn't be trying to get credit for respecting that rule.
    Thanks from Czernobog

Bullshit. It is common practice to release the names of crime victims in news reports. If this young man wanted to remain anonymous, then he should have sought victims to whom wasn't related.
