Each state is different. The State of New Jersey requires that the arresting agency redacts the name of any minors under the age of 17. If you noticed, in the newspaper story, it said "The teen, whose name has not been released..." It did not say the teen whose name was not known. Generally, media comply with requests not to print the name of a suspect even if known. While they could print the name, then cite freedom of the press, it could result in future FOIA requests moving very slowly through the system.

The media has since released the name and even his picture. This is something that every media outlet deals with, and they have to comply with the rules.

Who cares? I don't. Journalists don't owe a criminal "protection". That's not really their job.

Then don't. Pretend. They. Do. Don't give me some bullshit about "the name is being withheld because it is a minor", then proceed to say, "but we're secretly telling you who he is" by giving me all the information I need to find it with a simple internet search.

You guys seem to think that I' upset that they identified the kid. I'm not. I'm annoyed that they identified the kid, while intentionally pretending that they weren't. Bullshit like this is why people are losing faith in the media.
    Thanks from Amelia

Well, of course they have. The original story pretty much outed the kid, while pretending to not reveal his identity.

You're the only one spouting off nonsense about anyone "pretending" to do anything. You're making a mountain out of a molehill.

They didn't try to hide his identity. They reported that his identity was not being released at that time. What they reported was a true statement that the police gave them.

Really?!?! This is what passes for journalistic integrity these days?!?! I mean, for fuck's sake! If your gonna make it that easy, why pretend that you give a shit that he's a minor, and just print the kid's fuckin name?!?
    Dude, that's HILARIOUS.

This is not unusual for newspapers in the USA. We also do not print the name of a victim if the next of kin have not been notified, yet. Everyone may know whom it is from the story but they don't say the name until it is actually released. The law enforcement gives a statement or releases an incident report, that is what the reporter was writing the story based upon. In the story, the reporter stated the name had not been released, yet. It has been now.

Then they should have just given his name ... not acted like they were following some code which says not to release the names of minors.

This thread isn't about whether the names should be released. It's about news outlets which in the name of responsibility withhold names, but then seem to go out of their way to make it so that anyone else who wants to know the name can find it. The news outlet is being a phony.
