I understand that completely, but that has nothing to do with my point, which is glorification is quite a stretch and designed to paint the media negatively in this instance, when in actual fact it is simple reporting.

    1) What happened?

    2) Where?

    3) When?

    4) Who is involved?

These are to be contained within the first paragraph of any print media story, and television media follows the same rule.

Don't get me wrong, as I view the move positively.

They skip the who part with rape victims or juvenile offenders. So there is precedence with leaving identities out of the reporting.

Has hiding the identity of juvenile offenders reduced juvenile crime?

There are other fallacies with this opinion piece. Given that most mass shooters enter into their spree with the expectation that they will die, how are they supposed to enjoy the supposed glory they get in the media? Is there TV and internet in the afterlife? If, on the other hand, the mass murderer escapes from the scene of the crime, but the police know who it is, are they supposed to conceal his or her identity when public identification could help in their capture?

Copy cat effect is not the reason they don't publicize the names of juvenile offenders. It's not why they don't disclose the names of sex crime victims either.
This is a well documented effect of media coverage of mass shootings by several studies.

It's just a pat reaction by the right and NRA: We can control anything except guns. Given that the chances of getting even mainstream media consensus on suppressing news is near zero, this is just another fantasy solution.

Then it's up to the public to make them stop. Every time they show a name or picture, change the channel.

Good for them, more publications should follow suit.

True, as there are legal obligations in certain instances as in naming minors etc. But it is the general rule.

Of course, a few liberals think they can curb the power of terrible people by not using their name. Thus, instead of saying "Trump," they refer to "45," "small hands" or "the orange one." I guess it's some kind of progressive voodoo or magical thinking.

Yeah Robert, it's magic. Go with that.
