Try addressing the only point we have examined so far.

Are politicians and their news outlets too close to each other for the objectivity of the news outlet to be maintained?

I see it everywhere, all the time. How about you?

In the past 10 years, how often have you seen CBS confronting Obama or Fox confronting Trump?

Add up the number of chummy 60 minutes interviews or chummy Fox News interviews with one or another major politicians.

For every Chris Wallace who knows how to confront, there are a dozen commentators on Fox who just grease the wheels of their common interest.

For every ? at MSNBC, there are pre-aligned commentators cheering on the demise of Trump every day.

These kinds of alignments are part of the News business model.

Think that is good for the News?

The reaction to an invitation to examine a disturbing trend in journalism is met with mockery and misrepresentation.

Thus, when trying to stop someone who is seeking a truth you don't want explored, attack the messenger.

That is School of Smear method #1.

This book is not a polemical tirade. It's a report, detailed and documented.

Was it a smear when rubio told trump he had a little dick in the debates? You will find 10 times the smearing in the rep debates how come you don't mention them?

Some links on the fake news and political astroturf industries.

The Fake News Machine research paper comes at a time of increasing concern across the globe about the hacking of elections and the ways that fake news on social media has manipulated voters. The report delves into the underground marketplaces that can allow campaigns, political parties, private companies and other entities to strategically create and distribute fake content to shift public perceptions.

The reason fake news worked as a business model during the election campaign was that there was enough demand for it, and some of that demand comes from people who were kind of highly knowledgeable about politics and just have this insatiable thirst for information, even if it’s not true.

And as I am finishing The Smear, there were some real laughs in the final chapter.

Atkkisson documents (with quotes and sources) the close coordination of messaging among media outlets regarding the attempt of the MSM to discredit Trump during the election cycle. From "dark" to "dangerous" to "White Supremacist" to many other labels there is uniformity of wording and timing. One must recognize the echo chamber to have some clue as to what is going on. And of course, when a meme is obliterated by facts, the propaganda continues unabated. Goebbels would be proud.

One example of this was the smear that Melania Trump, born in Slovenia worked on a modeling job without documentation. The idea that Trump's wife might be an undocumented worker was too much to resist. Facts be damned. Multiple media outlets promote the speculation. When her former agent comes forward and states that he secured the proper visa, the Daily News demands documentation and calls his statement "a claim". Then a lawyer who was also a Hillary supporter publicly certifies a legitimate visa. There are a few, buried retractions in just a few of the many outlets that were too enthused about the greatness of the propaganda to care about the facts.

Having read two of her books, I know that Atkkisson cares deeply about the loss of journalistic ethics in American media. After reading a few examples of this in the 2016 election (including the smears from the right about Hillary's health issues) one might think she had made her point. But like any bench scientist conducting tests, she keeps reporting and documenting.

So how does the MSM respond to her? Smears, of course.

But this is now all around us. We are propaganda nation and the Russians didn't cause it.

Review of prominent smear techniques used by the Right, the Left and the Russians. Much of this is in my own words.

    1) Fake Grass Roots (movements, news, opinions) aka Astroturf (where buzz is created that appears to have lots of support, but is generated by professional propagandists)

    2) Fake editorials (where the writer was hired to create and post an opinion)

    3) Audience Stacking (where audiences at political events are hired to shout down opposing views and applaud the mandated and targeted winner.

    4) Collusion and Coordination of news, words, ranking of stories to create an impression of widespread agreement on the importance of a message or event

    5) Character assassination campaigns

    6) Fascist intimidation techniques against those who refuse to "play ball."

    7) Politicians and their agents rewarding reporters who "play ball" by giving them access to the inside sources.

    8) Fake News organizations whose mission is to promote all of these techniques in exchange for hard cash payments. Fake News for hire.

Final chapter starts with an exploration of foreign journalists who have experienced the new press fascism (my term, could also be called black listing or troll astroturfing).

In 2014, I realised there was a new phenomenon of Russian information warfare. This was anonymous or fake profiles spreading propaganda on social networks - Facebook, Vkontakte, Twitter. I wanted to find out what kind of influence and impact they actually have in Finland, on freedom of speech and public debate.
I asked Finnish people to tell me about their experiences.

[Soon after], propagandists started to spread fake information about me in Russian information spaces. I was framed as some kind of foreign agent or foreign spy. My contact information was put online along with that disinformation. This is the worst problem: some people actually believe it and they contacted me, and called me, and sent nasty text messages and threatening phone calls.
Some smear targets are more highly placed.

On topic... though he may not know it. He's talking about the propaganda. There are plenty of good liberals, but the propaganda is ruling the Democrat party.
