Our popular culture of the 1970s lionized "All the President's Men" which illustrated the pursuit of the truth bound by the requirements of journalism. A few quotes from that film. Now if you think that any newspaper gives a damn about getting people to go on the record (in order to do their stories) or insists on investigating topics the public doesn't know about or care about, you are living in an alternate reality. Today's press does very little "news" and very little investigating. It's mostly a soap opera because that's what sells. And sure, we have been here before, but we were not here 40 years ago. Something has changed.

Ben Bradlee: You know the results of the latest Gallup Poll? Half the country never even heard of the word Watergate. Nobody gives a shit. You guys are probably pretty tired, right? Well, you should be. Go on home, get a nice hot bath. Rest up... 15 minutes. Then get your asses back in gear. We're under a lot of pressure, you know, and you put us there. Nothing's riding on this except the, uh, first amendment to the Constitution, freedom of the press, and maybe the future of the country. Not that any of that matters, but if you guys fuck up again, I'm going to get mad. Goodnight.
Ben Bradlee: Goddammit, when is somebody going to go on the record in this story? You guys are about to write a story that says the former Attorney General, the highest-ranking law enforcement officer in this country, is a crook! Just be sure you're right.

This is not about the liberal media. It's about all of the media. Aligned media that preaches to the choir is not what the press is supposed to be doing. We need to be challenged by our media. Not told that our dreams are going to be realized because OUR media has the best propaganda.

BTW, the very first fake news story mentioned in The Smear is Pizzagate. This is a non-partisan issue.

Rolling Stone's take is linked. This is hardly what some right wing hack would want to list as a first example of fake news. In fact, it immediately demonstrates the essential evil, alignment between politicians and fake news sources. If it works, politicians will use it and they do.

This story was reported in partnership with The Investigative Fund and Reveal from the Center for Investigative Reporting.
it was unclear whether Pizzagate was mass hysteria or the work of politicos with real resources and agendas. It took the better part of a year (and two teams of researchers) to sift through the digital trail. We found ordinary people, online activists, bots, foreign agents and domestic political operatives. Many of them were associates of the Trump campaign. Others had ties with Russia. Working together – though often unwittingly – they flourished in a new "post-truth" information ecosystem, a space where false claims are defended as absolute facts. What's different about Pizzagate, says Samuel Woolley, a leading expert in computational propaganda, is it was "retweeted and picked up by some of the most powerful faces of American politics."

It is about the liberal media that tries to control the news and the elections.

I get that Trump is playing the media at its own game. He is playing the same fake news game they are playing at him. But Trump is not a journalist. And whether its Atkkisson or the two outfits listed in the rolling stone piece (who by the way, did an outrageous fake news piece last year about campus rape), somebody has to do original focused, fact based investigative reporting. The news business has to withdraw from outcome based influencing and positioning and get back to developing sound news stories.

Perhaps TRS has decided to change its ways?

The Columbia School of Journalism report, commissioned by Rolling Stone, described the article as "a story of journalistic failure"
