In an age when women had no right to vote and, in some states and circumstances not even the right to sign a contract or own property w/o the say so f father or husband they were certainly not talking about when the young woman turned 18 or 21.
The were talking about when she went through puberty. Due to health/nutrician a young girl might not start puberty until 13, 14 or even 15, later than today.
In rural areas at least by that time the girl was well versed in cooking, cleaning, gardening, sewing, and the other skills needed to be "a good wife", only thing lacking was the ability to produce children.
So yeah, in many, many cases as soon as a girl hit puberty it was time to find her a husband. Not as if Ma and Pa Rustic were going to send her back east to study to e a doctor, engineer or lawyer.

Now a girl might hit puberty at 11 years old and not even be out of college until 21 or later. LONG time to deal with those raging hormones and sexual cravings.
    Thanks from BigLeRoy

Why would she lack being able to have children? And I know he's right about that. My question marks were about them 'not being able to deal with teenage sexuality'

Well, I'm no doctor but I'm pretty sure a girl can't have children until after puberty.

You stipulated that the girls had hit puberty in your post.

What? I think what I said was that in the 18th & 19th centuries, especially in rural areas, as soon as a girl went through puberty the parents started looking for a husband for her. Did I not?

Hollywood gave you the answer: Now a girl might hit puberty at 11 years old and not even be out of college until 21 or later. LONG time to deal with those raging hormones and sexual cravings.

In earlier America, a girl (as he noted) might not hit puberty until 14 or 15, but parents were then NOT going to let her stay single and unattached until she was, say, 21-----there would be too many opportunities for illicit canoodling, which might result in pregnancies resulting in illegitimate children----and back then, the STIGMA of being an illegitimate child was MUCH greater.

In 19th century America, teenage girls could simply NOT be allowed to explore their own sexuality at their own pace. Arranged marriages at young ages were the norm.
    Thanks from Hollywood

And all of this, by the way, is why abstinence-only sex education programs are simply STUPID and fly in the face of science. Girls hitting puberty at 11, and not marrying until they are 27 or 28-----and people expect them to be CELIBATE that entire time? What a CRAZY and ABSURD notion! To think that people are going to practice celibacy for, what, a THIRD of their adulthood? When even PRIESTS struggle with that??
    Thanks from Hollywood
