    Unconditional Basic Income

How many would support the concept of an unconditional basic income?

    Specifically, this sort of option.

    1. All citizens between the ages of 21 and 64 would receive an unconditional cash transfer of $15,000 a year.
    2. All citizens at and above the age of 65 would receive an unconditional cash transfer of $30,000 a year.
    3. Social Security, SNAP, TANF, WIC, SSI, Unemployment Insurance, and Section 8 would all be discontinued.
    4. The existing funding for these programs, and the existing Social Security Trust Fund would be repurposed for this new program. The Social Security payroll tax would be eliminated. Funding would be acquired from raising personal income taxes on the wealthiest percentiles.

There have been proposals both from a Left- and Right-wing perspective supporting the concept of a basic income, although taking different forms depending on who you ask.

That would cost about $3 trillion annually. Would these payments be taxed?

How about Medicaid and Medicare, do they go away?

I would support it. How would they be taxed or would they?

Just another way to say "wealth redistribution".

They would. The idea would be to structure the tax code so that after a certain point (generally speaking, the middle to upper middle class area in income), you'd be paying it all back in taxes anyway, making it so that the only people effectively receiving a basic income would be the lower middle class and below.

    Mr. Ambicatus,

There are so many things wrong with this. The biggest one is the last, as there is no Social Security Trust Fund. It is there in name only. In actuallity, Social Security is a ponzi scheme with new money from SSI taxes going to pay for outlays. Second, you could tax the highest earners at 100% and it still wouldn't make a dent in the national debt, not to mention all the good money after bad you are suggesting.

Ergo, there really would be no money to pay for the bums expecting something for nothing.

Secondly, you couldn't eliminate all the programs you suggest. Once you start giving away money, the bums who take it come to accept it as a right.

Another ridiculous Socialist wet dream. I know that the idea of having to actually work for a living is offensive to many of the slackers out there, but some of use still prefer the dignity of actually earning our way and do not want to play for the lazy scum who think the world owes them something.

Got anymore trite platitudes, or are you actually going to answer my question.

How should we deal with technological unemployment?

    What about the COLA?

15 grand might not go so far if inflation ever comes back...

    Thx
