Silly comment, sir. For all the publicity incidents like that get, the chances of being involved in one are miniscule. I teach on a college campus, and we take necessary precautions, but it don't give active shooter situations much thought. Do you obsess over them?

I like it. I hate to SING IT. (Shrieking is best description I can come up with for the high notes).

A couple of days after the song was written, the Brits burned Washington to the ground and the President fled with the Federal silverware....

That sounds like it's from the third verse that we don't really sing much.

Plus, musically, it's too hard to sing--the range is greater than an octave and a half, falling in exactly the range that will be too high for some, too low for others.
This covers the breadth of subjects you are looking for. Plus its easy to sing..

You are right, but neither did we win. It was a totally silly pissing contest initiated by a new nation whose success at assisted rebellion had gone to its head. The Americans of the day were counting on conquering Canada whilst the British were locked in a death match with Napoleonic France and Imperial Spain, and sadly, the British did not show the good sense to discontinue the impressment to which Americans took exception, until it was too late. Britain of the 19th century was as arrogant as any empire whose reach stretches across the globe, so the blame for the conflict was evenly spread. The outcome of that unnecessary conflict was the considerable loss of life, no gain of territory for the Americans, and a great deal of trans-Atlantic ill-feeling and distrust which lasted for the next hundred years.

And while this is no justification for invading American maritime sovereignty, the boarding of American merchant vessels was for the purpose of capturing British seamen who had deserted from the Royal Navy - I suspect few people realise that.

The only victor in the War of 1812 was Canada - the United States declared war on Great Britain and set out to make Canada states in the union. Ten American armies crossed into Canada and all were driven out.

As far as I am concerned, that was another example of nationalism taken to extremes, and the sooner we grow up to the extent that an accident of birth, involving the piece of dirt upon which we were born, neither designates superiority nor inferiority, nor indeed friendship or enmity, the better place the world will be. IMO globalism, with all its problems, is the lesser of the two evils - nationalism by far the worse.

The National Anthem is a horrible song to listen to and to sing. America the Beautiful would have been a much better National Anthem in my opinion.
