We have a pretty good idea of where the missiles are going, and we read the telemetry data for future use. Gain a lot of data about the Norks missile program from the data.

We would need a missile defense system set up in Japan which we don't or have a ship with the capability to do it in the right place.

I'm fairly certain most of those ships are around Guam at the moment.

They might be moving one into the area however.

Because if shot down likely it falls on Japanese territory instead of flying over the country and into international water, is my guess.

I wonder if it isn't because allowing NK to sabre-rattle is probably safer as long as we can know it isn't apt to hit anything we care about.

And also, if we try and miss, it would just empower NK. So why risk it?

    Pretty much.

Hitting them back would just escalate everything.

    Really not worth it.

It's the lower altitude and across their country that's particularly aggressive.

WE don't want to give away our capabilities. Also positioning of the ships for the shot. Best saved for the real event. The Russians and Chinese watch and monitor everything we do.

    Other reason:

Because America needs a boogyman and Trump needs someone worse than him for the world to hate.
Look how long they kept Osama alive.

There will always be a factor of uncertainty in the accuracy of the anti-missile... the first time they actually use it that uncertainty will evaporate...

Let's suppose they are only 10% effective... that's better than nothing, but might embolden NK, this way they have to guess.

And they probably aren't that accurate, If it were more effective I imagine they would have already shot one down.

    Thx
