What do you mean by "undermine America"? Chaos? Anarchy? Zombie apocalypse?

Attacks on the power grid would be highly effective. Transport. Water. Even banking.

As a sideline. Do you believe there are paid shills/trolls that are regulars that visit this website to foment division?
Fuck no. There's no shortage of volunteers. Why waste the dough? Not to mention, much as we love PH, it is not especially prominent among American political message boards.

If you believe they visit this site, what do you look for to try to identify them and how would a site like this prevent their presence?
I think this is a legitimate concern for major news outlets. It would significantly reduce effective communication if people lost faith in such well-respected sources as the AP, Reuters, etc.

The "sideline" questions are intended to demonstrate how difficult it might be for any website managers to identify and possibly block them, not to deny them freedom of speech, but to block any intent to deceive and abuse freedom of speech to spread lies, misinformation and foment division.
Sadly, freedom of speech includes the right to spread lies (unless defamatory), etc. And, as you say, the owners of media are not constrained by the first amendment anyway, as they are private persons rather than government.

There's no easy solution to the problem, and mere vigilance by the public is clearly inadequate.
