Family protection is best accomplished in the home with a cheap/reliable shotgun.

That's my opinion based on your posts.
You are correct. I am 73 years old and well past my Marine Corps abilities, but I am still a great shot, still have an active mind, and great judgment as to when and how force should and can be used effectively.

As for home defense, I have a pump 12 gauge shotgun with a 20" barrel loaded with number 4 shot (.223 diameter lead balls) and flechettes. That ought to do the trick.

Don't own any guns but have had a shotgun on the wish list for a while now. My brother is a collector though, probably has dozens of them. I just like to go to the range every once in while.

I just happen to live two blocks away from the Police Dept. now, but five years ago I lived out of city limits and there could be up to a two hour wait time for the police to arrive. By the way that was three miles from Microsoft, very nice city of Redmond Wa.

Plus there is the obvious fact that firearms have other uses that self defense.

What the fuck is WRONG with you?
That's what I thought, you are self reliant and have your own weapons for self defense .

    I'm almost 72 myself.
I disagree with everything you post but I applaud old-timers like us being here.

Not relevant, and does not answer the question.

That does not make sense. There are other ways to keep track of those records - like registration of the car itself. They can keep an index of everyone from Vital Statistics and do it that way (for example). No, the reasons for requiring a driver's license is to ensure that drivers have basic training in operating a vehicle.

Not to say I agree with treating cars and guns in exactly the same way. They are different things, and should be treated differently.

No, it does not. Whether something is in the Constitution has nothing to do with why driver's licenses are required. To quote the original exchange, then:

So: why does one need a permit to drive a car?
