Politics was already polarized before Trump became elected. Civil discourse had been an oxymoron for a while. That said, he has done little to ameliorate our country’s divisions.

    IMO

But he's done a lot to exacerbate it.

The gop got the whole thing going when McConnell said the GOP will make Obama a one term president. They were very adamant that he was the liberals messiah or muslim or who knows what all they claimed. Everything he did was ridiculed and when rumpy does the same thing he is exalted for being so original.

No. We've been hard at work to those ends for many years before Trump was even a Presidential contender... on the Simpson's episode.

Trump is part of the result.

    Cake and eat it too.

    Here
Consciously or not, what's happening in this nation now, without a leader to recognize it and direct us away from it, instead of exacerbating it, via intentional collusion (because of black mail or some "together we can rule the world" oligarchical "pact") or plain narcissistic caused lack of recognition for all the looking for attention for himself.......Americans should be more than wary of what's going on, regardless of whether it is intentional or coincidental to the characteristics and personalities of historical dictatorships and control freaks who are raised to power based on those who raise them to power wanting to exploit their bullying ways to push their own agendas, then too late, find out they fed a monster that not only pushes their agendas through, but the personal agenda of those they gave power to and that agenda is not only horrific, but removes the capacity of the people to object to, challenge or remove, the person they put in office.

One of the first things dictators do is try to control information, if not by barring all media, but state run and approve media, by discrediting any media that exposes corruption and promoting media that does nothing but flatter that dictator. The next thing? Remove the power of the people, to remove the person they put in power. When that becomes too obvious and hard to do, erode that power, little by little, until it's easier to take it all the way. Cronyism......Who, but crooks, like the removal of laws and regulations that outlaw their crooked activities, removed? You can't arrest/stop someone from doing something that steals from others, unless there is a law/rule against doing it. Remove the law and the crooks have a field day and no one can stop them. Lots more things, but these are perhaps the main ones and the ones anyone should be able to identify with what has been going on in this nation and with the POTUS, aside from a really WEIRD bias in favor of Vladimir Putin that is totally noticeable, yet has gone unchallenged by anything, but the Mueller investigation into possible wrongdoing by members of the Trump campaign, possibly Trump himself. So far, things have been found, people indicted and now, jailed. Why aren't a lot more Americans disturbed by this and how is putting one's personal politics ahead of a serious concern about the trade-offs they could be making (that are far worse)? I don't know, but I have been on boats that sailed before, having a bad feeling and had those bad feelings come to pass, people looking at me when I pointed out the concerns ahead of time, like I had three heads.

The division was created some time ago. Putin is anti globalist (that's why the media insists he's the worst person out there)...

The institutions are corrupted at the heads, that corruption is the source of the division because of their influence.

Trump may have won the presidency, he did not win the media, academia, the courts, the banks, the alliances. They are still trying to act as though Clinton won.

I agree that the GOP is the most corrupt political body in the free world, only rivaled by Russia and third world dictatorships. So you got that much right.

You answered a question I never asked.
    Here's my question again:
Is Trump/GOP doing Putin's work of dividing us and our democratic institutions?

I didn't ask ..."Did Trump/GOP originate the attack on our democratic institutions and dividing us?"
The answer to that question is no....but they certainly exacerbated it to the point of crisis.
