It's sure cheaper than entering into a conventional war. They don't have to be robots either, just "programmed" humans, some of them posing under different identities and always maintaining the same set of rules.......Totally ignore facts and figures, float accusations about Trump's opponents and consistently defend and build up Trump, regardless of what he does. It also doesn't always have to be about Trump, but about his opponents and essentially with an aim to divide America, to, if nothing else, weaken it as a global power and replace it. There are also U.S. sanctions in place on Russia and more to be placed because of their election interference. They would want a President like the one who just pardoned ranchers that made a mess of a national wildlife reserve and cost the government money, all because they seem to think they or their ancestors would have any land, were it NOT for federal land purchases AND negotiated territories as the result of wars. In essence, they want a U.S. President who is going to lift U.S. sanctions on them. Whether that would be too obvious a move for Trump to do, in light of Congress voting to impose sanctions for their election interference, remains to be seen. This POTUS seems to be able to do just about anything, and still be supported by a core base, which actually might in large part, be made up as foreigners, paid by their government to work in troll farms, posing as Trump supporters (some posing as several people and spending their days circulating from political forum to political forum, posting the same basic BS. They don't have to "catch" a whole boat load of Americans, only "just enough" to push an election the way they would like it to go.

They don't have to be all Russian either, but it would be harder to nail foreigners than Americans, just like all the telephone scammers now employing spoofing software to make their calls look like they are from local callers.

Proxy servers and more can also mask origination.

People forget Hitler's success at putting himself and the NAZIs in power and how he did it, by aiming propaganda at the least educated of the population.

Why would they need to post from Russia? In fact, why would the even need to be russian?

Of course I meant because we're already so politically informed that propaganda will have a much higher failure rate, and even if it does find an audience, it isn't going to sway anyone's opinion from what it already was. In addition to being very politically informed, we're also very stubborn in our opinions... unlike the sheep on Twitter who are so much more easily duped. I mean... there's a guy on Youtube who thinks he proved the Earth is flat by bringing a level onto airplane and setting it up on his fold down table. And was serious. I think we're forgetting what a select crowd we are.

A few people on Twitter or Facebook could influence many tens or even hundreds of thousands. Here, maybe one or two?

I think there's all kinds of "IP scrambling" software and such, these days, which can hide your actual location and make it look like you are posting from the other side of the world from where you really are...

Takes professional cyber security experts with professional equipment, to decipher those things...

The biggest dread of a con artist is for enough people to recognize their con artistry, it not only loses its effectiveness, it gets the con artist jailed or run out of town, if they don't slip out quickly on their own, before being tarred and feathered.

The residents of NYC and lots of people in NY State are well aware of Trump's antics.........so he had to go where his real (instead of reality TV) reputation had not preceded him.

Well, there are ways... Crypto currency and such, for example...

But, yeah, it does all seem like a highly complex operation, not sure if worth the time, effort, and money, to infiltrate and influence some little forum out there...

Do you remember the diplomatic compounds closed by President Obama?

Trump administration moves to return Russian compounds in Maryland and New York

If your "diplomatic" job was to sit at a computer all day, circulating political and social media websites, posting propaganda and posing as Americans, who would be paying you?

Yes, I'm sure there are foreign agents spamming sites with propaganda (I've read some exposés on the subject and much of the material comes from Eastern Europe), but I'm unsure as to the extent of the impact of such operations. Sites like this aren't significant enough to give the attention to in my opinion.
