    All utilities are regulated is the point. If you can't see it with energy then see it in other areas. Verizon was required to unlock every 4G LTE phone they sold for their network. Why? In exchange for being allowed to purchase the use of spectrum that then no other private company could use in the same manner.

    Most techs are larger than the classic examples of prior monopolies. They can help or hurt the public interest based off their decisions. So when you are in the information business and you choose to withhold or promote certain information, you can alter the public perception and public outcomes.

    So basically if Alex Jones can alter elections with fake news and conspiracies, and Russian bots can alter elections with fake news and conspiracies then these entities are too big to leave unregulated. If they don't have a compelling interest, as would likely need to be developed via legislation, court rulings, etc then they can essentially alter public perception and elections at their whim. That is too much power for a private company to have without public oversight.
