The Church of Scientology was devastated by the Internet. Throughout the 1970s and 80s, they were successful because they were able to control public perception. They promise wonderful things, and in 1985, if you wanted to learn more about the CoS, you didn't have many resources. If you found any books on the subject, it's likely they were written by the CoS. If anyone wrote anything negative, it rarely got published, because the CoS had an army of lawyers ready to sue people into the ground.

Now, if you Google "Church of Scientology," it's easy to learn how destructive the organization is.

Back in 1996, SPY Magazine published a story titled "Do You Want to Buy a Bridge." It was written by Mark Ebner, who knowingly "infiltrated" the lower levels of Scientology, documenting every step of the way. His writing style will make you laugh occasionally - but don't forget - this is a seriously dangerous organization.

Yes the second incursion was revenge for killed ATF officer. They fired the shot that started the fire. Horrifying. They could have arrested the dipshit they were after any other place.

You will excuse me for having the same personal reaction to people believing in a guy walking on water, turning water into wine, creating the world out of nothing, the male humans out of dirt, and the female humans out of a dude's rib cage, some guy splitting the red sea, a burning bush telling folks words of wisdom.. you name it. Harry Potter has nothing on those stories.
I don't think you understand. People aren't critical of the Church of Scientology because of their beliefs. All religions look bizarre to outsiders. It's the actions that are being criticized. They isolate and exploit members and harass critics.

That argument would get some VERY interesting responses in a thread about Islam.

I've only watched a little of the Remini series. What I've seen was an interview with a former member who is mentally ill and he told the story of how Scientology officials treated his mental illness by locking him in a room and there was a story of a harassment campaign against a critic. Has the series been critical against its doctrine?

Well i appreciate you trying to think for me.. as an attempt, even if the skills applied don't match with the task at hand.

If you read the post i responded to, it was in regards of WHAT Scientology provides as a belief to its members. Hence my response.

And I'm trying to explain what classifies a religion as a cult. Most are not.

I almost have to admire them for going after the IRS though. That was ballsy.

So WHEN the book was written determines if it's valid as an actual religion or not ? Is that what you're saying ?
How is the bible any different from Dianetics ?
How is the book of Mormons any different ? Just because they're OLDER? I can't follow that logic, sorry.

While I agree with you, calling a religion a cult is like calling a PH member a troll. It's very subjective.
