Pope Francis is open to married men becoming priests

This is a really big deal IMO. It makes all kinds of sense to me but is so against established Catholic dogma. Just wow.

So, what are the odds of it being done?

And will women priests be next?

In an interview with German newspaper Die Zeit, Pope Francis said the lack of Catholic priests was an "enormous problem" for the Church, and indicated he would be open to a change in the rules governing eligibility for the priesthood.

"We need to consider if 'viri probati' could be a possibility," he said. "If so, we would need to determine what duties they could undertake, for example, in remote communities."

Viri probati is the Latin term for "tested men" or married men of outstanding faith and virtue.

The option would allow men who are already married to be ordained as priests. But single men who are already priests would not be allowed to marry, according to the Pope.

'bout time they start letting priest marry again. its been a thousand years since the ban.. methinks its time to end that experiment.

Infact I'd take it a step further and let women become ordained clergy. Catholic women should be allowed into the upper management levels of the corporation that they are part of.

I'm really not a fan of this pope... what with how he hates Christianity (or at least the Christian roots of europe), and more.

However, historically, that was one of the greatest errors of Christianity. By taking the most highly intelligent and literate people and not allowing them to procreate, that pulls the most intelligent out of the gene pool and can only cause harm long term.

On the other hand, rabbis are on a similar page, but by encouraging studying, making rabbis a highly regarded position and allowing them to marry and have children, it's been estimated that Jewish people have been increasing their average IQ an estimated 5 points per generation. BTW, Ashkenazi jews, on average have the highest bell curve of intelligence.

The whole priests not marrying thing caused a lot of problems for the church. There was a time when if a man hadn't married by a certain age and unless he was dating a lot of women, people gave him the side eye and assumed he was gay or something. And this was an era when you did not want people thinking you were gay. So if you have a guy who isn't interested in women. Or more to the point, he liked boys. What career path could he take that would not only give him an excuse not to be married, but would put him in contact with little boys? And as a bonus, he'd be in a position of trust where families wouldn't think twice about leaving their kids alone with him.

Change or die=Pope has just realized priesthood is pretty much a profession going into decline due to lack of interest and loss of respect for the position. It used to be people looked up and respected the local priest. Now you can almost here people thinking, so is this guy into little boys or is he doing the housekeeper?

People who abuse children have a tendency to gravitate towards those professions that put them into contact with their victim pool. It's a problem in education as well as the priesthood.

BTW........I'd like to say more but "you" have left me no choice.......

I have often said this before and here we have another illustration of it.

China and the Vatican have one common trait. Although they are both very reactionary, they are both realists and seem to know the minimum they need to change in order to not be destroyed from within.

They both liberalize just enough and no more.

When I look back at my Catholic religious instruction as a kid, ALL of it was done by women - nuns. The church was happy to let women take on the chore of dealing with a classroom of kids who'd rather be elsewhere, but barred women from positions of leadership in the church.
