Judaism does avoid the inherent contraditions of Christianity on the "Biblical God"..

if still portraying him as a violent, genocidal tribalist.

Judaism avoids the "God is Stalin one minute....Gandhi the next" problems with Christianity.

BUT it still depicts God as a totally unlikeable character, evil, capricious, and bloodthirsty (unless of course, you're one of his "Chosen People").

It's amazing what some will say...no regard for how ridiculous they look as they speak out loudly from a position of complete ignorance.

Regarding the parenthetical phrase above, the Jews were "chosen" to get crapped on by God worse than most.

In the Bible, there's always the excuse that "They brought it on themselves by rejecting/disobeying God".

Of course, with the Holocaust, it became more difficult to "explain away" (except by the horrific idea of "We Jews had to suffer the Holocaust, in order to see the State of Israel created").

But for much of the Bible, God is slaughtering or ordering the slaughter of the enemies of the Jews. Which while showing him "loyal" to them.....contradicts the later Christian idea that "God loves ALL his children".....

    yeah....ask the Amalekites about that.

He also stranded them in the desert for four decades, leaving them all to die (their progeny survived).

Yes, but then they got to exterminate the Canaanites and steal their property.

Nah, the Babylonians and the Persians did most of the heavy-lifting - assuming you talk to an archaeologist, rather than a biblical scholar.

That would be a thread for the History Forum, rather than the Religion Forum.
