At junior school we were required to gabble a meaningless grace learned by rote, before food was served.
Since then, well into a long adulthood, I have never encountered a meal where a grace was said. If I did, I would sit quietly and respectfully till the participants were finished, but bowing heads, closing eyes or holding hands would not happen, nor I hope, would they be expected.
    Thanks from Madeline

The quarry of prey is an important part of the ritual that leads up to giving thanks for our supper. As an atheist I always welcome the opportunity to lead the prayer because I have a good understand of the human connection to our universe. Kids who are allowed to be part of the hunt and cleaning of their meal get to see that us atheist are not the demons their parents make us out to be.

Something had to die for us to eat. You don't have to be religious to talk about sacrifice.

I recently was invited to keynote at a public school district. I was standing at the podium and the superintendent asked everyone to pray..it was breakfast. I was really uncomfortable because I am an atheist and because it was public schools. I just stood there

It's easy to fake praying along with others.
Christians do it all the time......even in church.

If you are at a friend's house and the family is Christian, common decency says to participate in the prayer. It it isn't like the atheist is being forced to participate on a religious activity. All he or she has to do is bow the head and close the eyes.
    Thanks from Benji

sorry.... nope, not a chance. All you have to do is sit politely and let them do their thing.
