    Southern Baptist Convention

Finally decided enough was enough. Bet my old Preacher is fuming. He used to come back from the Conventions bragging that his side won. The bigotry, concentrating on abortion,Gays and love of guns may be fading as they lose converts.

Sorry,Old Gaffer. The full Church decided to come into the present, accepting, not dividing. They have lost 7 million members in the recent past. The smart side won this time.

That's why I left organized religion.

I go to a church now that simply celebrates being Christians.

No boring sermons or hymns allowed.

Ahh, the Southern Baptists, always on the right side of history. Like when they apologized for the church being born out of its support of slavery and for it not supporting the civil rights movement. Sure, the apology came in 1995, but why dwell in the past?

I was raised southern Baptist and its all hellfire and brimstone.

I remember in 1982 our pastor gave a sermon about the evils of the music at the time so I went home and wrote down the lyrics to this song which is about God thinking he might change his mind.

Next time I saw him I gave him the paper and he didn't even read it, just crumpled it up and tossed it in the trash.

I have been told that Jimmy Carter resigned from the Southern Baptists due to:

In a move that demonstrates the conservative hold on the nation's largest Protestant denomination, the Southern Baptist Convention on Tuesday amended its official statement of belief to declare that wives must "submit graciously" to the leadership of their husbands.

"A wife is to submit graciously to the servant leadership of her husband even as the church willingly submits to the headship of Christ," said the resolution.

The vote by the convention, which is meeting in Salt Lake City, marked the first time in 35 years that the Southern Baptists have amended their statement of "Baptist Faith and Message," which sets out principles that Southern Baptists are expected to follow.
If resign is the correct term.

Jimmy Carter Leaves Southern Baptists - ABC News

In an interview with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution published today, Carter says Southern Baptist leaders reading the Bible out of context led to the adoption of increasingly “rigid” views.

“I’m familiar with the verses they have quoted about wives being subjugated to their husbands,” he told the paper. “In my opinion, this is a distortion of the meaning of Scripture. … I personally feel the Bible says all people are equal in the eyes of God. I personally feel that women should play an absolutely equal role in service of Christ in the church.”

Uh, no sermons, no hymns? So, how exactly do you guys "celebrate being Christians?"

    Oh c'mon, I swear I won't tell anyone.
Dancing, fireworks, snake-handling mass orgies, what?
