    Apatheist here.

Apatheism (/ˌŠpəˈθiːɪzəm/ a portmanteau of apathy and theism) is the philosophical view that one should be apathetic towards the existence or non-existence of god(s). It is more of an attitude rather than a belief, claim or belief system.[1][2]

An apatheist is someone who is not interested in accepting or rejecting any claims that gods exist or do not exist. An apatheist may thus decide to live as if there are no gods. The existence of god(s) is not rejected, but may be designated irrelevant.[3]

Whether or not gods exist will not determine how I conduct myself. If I do a good deed, it is for no other reason than I feel it's the right thing.

If you ask some people why they do good deeds they will respond so that they will be rewarded in heaven. One could argue that the good acts done were not truly altruistic as a payoff is expected in the end.

I have a problem with the 'heaven" thing. It reminds me of the idea that as a child you should be good so you get something good from santa. Seems tacky.

I also believe our egos can't accept that when we die -- that is it. Therefore many of us have to believe in the afterlife because we can't accept the former.

If god is pissed for not believing when it shows zero evidence of its existence, then its an asshole.

I think agnostic is the truly only religious views that is honest, basically i don't know.

On the other hand, the good feeling you get from doing what you feel is the right thing is a payoff. And, I suspect, an immediate one. It also allows you the joy of arguing moral superiority for this approach, which is another, perhaps less immediate payoff.

It is for this reason that Judaism finds doing something that is a mitzvah (commandment) is morally praiseworthy on account of it being the right thing to do rather than because you want to do it. In the latter case, you get an immediate payoff. In the former, you may not live to see a payoff at all. An example: a Jew may not charge - or even receive - interest on a loan to another Jew. This includes a "thank you" for the loan in the first place, which would constitute a reward to the lender for having given the loan.

Of course, issues of an afterlife in Judaism are kind of murky, and bear little relation to the Xian "heaven." The issue is doing things while you are alive for their own sake, not because of any forthcoming reward.

Over time I have just become disenchanted with religion in general. I find it unsatisfying at the very least and infuriating too often. I just cannot and do not believe that God is up there controlling what happens here on earth or controlling individuals. The concept of praying to God to spare you from disaster or to bless you with good fortune seems absurd. Everything that happens is physics. Recently a meme has been popping up on FB that the hurricanes and fires are happening because we've taken God away or some such. What a ridiculous idea. God punishes us when we don't praise Him and pray to Him enough? Really?! Or the one that really gets me is some stating that something like Sandy Hook happened because here's no prayer in school. That's a horrible God who would allow a bunch of little kids to be slaughtered just because they weren't praying to Him. I wouldn't want anything to do with a god like that.

I suppose it's not so much that I don't believe in God, I just dislike the perverted way humans interpret what God is and how to relate to Him. I guess that's why I'm an agnostic.

Absolutely. No one knows whether or not there really is a god. What's nearly certain anyway is that none of the gods humans have created over the centuries are real.

But, even that can't be proven. Think how surprised the jihadis will be to go into the next life expecting 70 virgins only to find Thor on the throne shaking his hammer at them for being so stupid.
