I don't even like to kill buggy-bugs. Although some have to be, if they present a danger. Like fleas. I will mass-murder the fuck out of fleas.

For other buggy-bugs I have a repellent that keeps them from coming in and I don't kill them outside. I will even step around a roach. As long as Mr Roach is outside. Mr Possum would like to eat Mr. Roach! Doesn't do anything for me to kill him.

Plants want to live too! Many have defenses against being eaten. Like tomatoes. I can't remember the rest now. Poor tomatoes, we don't care what they do to our internal eco-system, we eat them anyway. But they make some animals sick and therefore avoid.

My thought was, 'Oh, good the fox got something to eat and is maybe taking it to its cubs.' She was all upset that something was killed. And we got into the discussion of how life would be rather pointless if you always felt great and nothing bad ever happened. And I maintain that the universe and how it works is quite good and amazing. She disagrees. But you can't know happiness if you don't know sorrow. Biology and everything is amazing and astounding and functions so well. It truly is mind boggling if you think about it.
What if an alien species comes needing to eat us? You won't be rooting for the 'fox' anymore! But I hear ya. I have a conundrum during nature shows. It usually comes down to who the show is focusing on. If their subject is Lions, I root for them to find food. IF the subject is a prey animal, I root for it to stay alive. /shrug.

Of course. An obligate carnivore. Animals must die for my cat to have species appropriate food as well.

Thanks for the tip, always looking for a good book.
Actually, it's more biology and anthropology.

I think because I take God out of the equation I am able to view it all very clinically. It all makes perfectly good sense to me. I find it all quite brilliant. As to whether anything "deserves" to live, it depends on stuff. I suppose you could say that the mastodons "deserved" to live. But biological forces also had a right to kill them off.

Is that the only way a god should set up a universe?
For those who believe: What do they eat in Heaven?
