Agreed......but you first have to take the concept of an all-powerful benevolent god out of the equation, right?
To me, that leads to 2 logical alternatives:
    1. There is no such thing as god.
    or
    2. God is not benevolent.

Or 3 as many believe, we can't know the mind of God.

But cock fighting makes me want to puke more than MMA where at least the participants are willing.
The chickens are willing participants in cock fights, just as pit bulls are willing participants in dog fights. The only human intervention in those sports is the engagement in selectively breeding for aggressive behavior. Those animals don't have to be forced to fight. They merely require being allowed to fight. Humans don't train fighting cocks or dogs to fight. The competition involves nothing more on the part of the human participants than breeding the most aggressive animals and then placing them into the fighting pit.

Bull fighting, on the other hand, involves humans physically attacking the animals, while hunting dogs and sled racing dogs require extensive training by their human owners in order for them to participate in their sports, which can (and often does) place those animals in life threatening situations. The same is true for dogs which are trained to engage in military and police work, which often puts those animals' lives in jeopardy. Of course, we tend to celebrate people training dogs to engage in life threatening behavior, so long as the sacrifice these animals face reduces the risk to human life.

So, I think the question is moot. I'm not quite sure what the OP means by "deserve".
It's pretty obvious to me that the OP concerns human attitudes regarding the relative value of various non-human animals' lives.

More particularly what gives humans the right to take lives not required for our survival or necessitated by self-defense.

    Exhibit A

Fuck these two cowards and their father.

What's the name of this animal, which was unfortunately not able to kill this two or three shrunken heads? Is it a leopard? This will make our soldiers not happy. They hate it, if someone kills a leopard.

It takes the Marine corps only 12 weeks to turn a peaceful/religious civilian into a ruthless killing machine of fellow humans.
To me that means that the killer was always just below the surface waiting for an excuse to do what comes naturally to him.......KILL.
I disagree with how you characterize a professional Marine, their training, and civilians. Also, I think that killing is a means, not an end... probably for most animals as well.

The obvious point was to show how easy it is to release the killer lurking just below the surface in human beings.

I meant to offend the holier-than-thou crowd who think they are superior to any other life form on earth. They/We aren't.

I'm not sure I agree with the idea that everyone has a killer just beneath the surface. We do kill for food and some enjoy hunting. For healthy people it's not so much the joy of actually killing that makes hunting enjoyable. It think it's the challenge. And humans will kill in self-defense or in defense of others. But I don't believe mentally healthy humans have an instinct to kill simply for the sake of killing. And I don't think most people have a need for violence. We are capable of violence because of certain circumstances. It does take a good deal of training and discipline to make people able to be good fighters in war because it doesn't actually come naturally.

I am sure in Heaven the creatures never die just like we won't.

But in order to get there you do sort of have to die.
So you don't agree with some churches that animals don't have souls so they can't go to heaven?
