It's similar to people who claim to have been abducted by aliens, and hang out all night near Area 51, hoping to see some odd lights. They're not (necessarily) deluded... they're lonely. And being a member of this small, well-known club with rather simple membership requirements helps them cope.
To the Bold: Well...it kinda does, though, doesn't it? I mean, it's entire raison d'etre is to hate on science, and tell everyone how scientists are poopie-heads, liars, and fakes.

ON EDIT: Ya know...upon reflection, I probably shouldn't have posted that, as someone is sure to miss the LOL, and report me for "attacking another poster..."

But, seriously, I have been seeing a rise in this, particularly on the internut, so I was curious if it had found its way here.
Yup, even after I come right out and say "doowd, we were kidding," BOTH of us will get thread banned and eventually, it will lead to us being shot in the head by Djinn who is eager to prove himself as bi-partisan and not taking sides.

Hating on "science" isn't really the same as hating on a religious, ethnic, or similar demographic. Perhaps some of these flat-earthers are critical of scientists - but it's rare that they'll verbally attack specific individuals in the scientific community. "Hating on science" is very different from "hating scientists."

LOL, this was in 1949....we didn't even have electricity or running water...lived on a farm. We did have a battery powered radio that we could listen to radio shows in the evening, Inner Sanctum was my favorite...

Actually it isn't. There is some movement amongst modern youth that believe this. Some new guy just recently re-introduced it. Its spread to more of Europe and Canada as well. Unbelievable. Social media has helped it..

"Plenty of celebs have been quite vocal with their beliefs. For instance, on Jan. 25, 2016, rapper-singer Bobby Ray Simmons Jr. (known as B.o.B) released a track called "Flatline" in which he disses astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, after the two had a Twitter battle over the spherical-ness of the planet. B.o.B is convinced Earth is flat."

Honestly I think its all part of people sort of thumbing their noses at everything and anything. Corporations, banks, medicine, scientists, news, education etc. They think "someone out there" is always lying to them to keep them in line. Major conspiracy types.

I wondered too. A friend passed on the link to a website for a US based flat earth "club" or whatever they called themselves. At first I thought the whole thing was just a spoof, but damn, those dudes were serious.

Lies by authoritarian government types. That's what they really think.

"Flat-earthers believe photos of the globe are photoshopped; GPS devices are rigged to make airplane pilots think they are flying in straight lines around a sphere when they are actually flying in circles above a disc. The motive for world governments' concealment of the true shape of the Earth has not been ascertained, but flat-earthers believe it is probably financial."

A great description of deniers in general, wink, wink.
