Hi MaryAnne...This brings up the wider picture of what seems to be happening around the world with a variety of social issues.

Too much hypocrisy will do that to ANY institution, including democracies, like the U.S. Add denial that it is happening and attempts to blame the victims of it, by the institutions and the problem becomes worse and only seems to hasten their downfall.

Look at the issue of how many Evangelicals, trash homosexuality and abortion, all the while supporting a greedy, gluttonous, lying, narcissistic adulterer for POTUS. Look at the issue of low and middle class people electing a born with a silver spoon in his mouth, crooked billionaire to "drain the swamp" in Washington who merely displaced some millionaire by replacing them with billionaires. Wall Street is hitting records and cheering today, why? Because the tax bill helps the low and middle income people invest more, like they are going to take their extra few hundred dollars and use it to buy into mutual funds, stocks or buy a new house? They're cheering because the already wealthy are being enriched, yet again and the same denial will be put forth.

The irony and the illustration is, that the economy was heating up, withOUT the tax cut, PROVING it did NOT need a tax cut, to do so. Now, as we will see, those who receive the most from the tax cut, will do the same as they have done with all the other tax cuts. Use them to enrich themselves, NOT the people that supported them by electing them so they would provide a hand up. It's kind of like letting a glutton go before you in line at a buffet hoping they might return the kindness somehow, only to have them clear all the trays of food, before you get to them.

For someone making a low wage, a tax cut that let's them keep $100 more than they would otherwise, sounds like someone handing out candy to them, but a raise in pay would provide A LOT more, be sustainable and be a true stimulation for the overall economy. Even at the same rate of taxes, someone making more, is going to pay more in taxes to help pay down the nation's debt by reducing deficit spending.

Greed has ruled supreme in this nation for decades in spite of those trying to level the playing field just a bit. The question we might ask could be if we are seeing some "final battles" being fought, as we speak, about a whole host of things, including institutions like the Catholic Church and if so, what will come out on top.

There are Catholics in my greater family, via marriage. Some have noted the hypocrisy and have either left the church or war in their minds with it, the latter finding some hope in Pope Francis who has at minimum, acknowledged the hypocrisies, been doubted and called a pariah, even a heretic, by some within the church and some so called conservative "adherents" to Catholicism.

It's a real dilemma, no matter what the issue. How does one overcome the denial and blindness of those who willingly deny or defend, even promote, the indefensible? People know child molestation is wrong (except for those who perpetrate it), yet there are people that either deny it or defend it on what seems a much greater scale than merely the perpetrators of it. If something like lies and child molestation are pervasive, then why deny it and not want to purge THAT danger to one's institution rather than try to defend it and ultimately have denial and/or defense of such things, cause a more rapid demise of such institutions.

If it were NOT for someone like Pope Francis and I think he has to be cautious in his attempts to purge the hypocrisies from the church, making him walk a very fine line, there may be a chance the Catholic church might be much further along in its act of suicide and have little chance of preventing it from coming to completion.

The Market is going up because the Elite are getting tax breaks, the middle pennies and even that goes away in a few years.

Much like the Churches. They are backing the worst of humanity.encouraging Oligarchy. All the while ranting about abortion, gays and guns. The young see the lies and hypocracy they want no part of it they have duped the suckers far too long and are complaining about their numbers going down. Yet still refuse to admit they are doing that to themselves.

They back a lame brained fool, yet still play the victim.

In Ireland they covered the wrong doing, bled the Parishoners so they could lead lavish life styles.

Sadly, the same could be said of places here in the U.S. where the Roy Moore's of the world would actually be elected sacrificing minors and children, in favor of politics. Then there is the adult side of the same. Bulldoze over charges of sexual misconduct, in favor of politics (see POTUS and others), then deny there is a problem at the same time you're decrying the problem.

    The gubmint of Ireland.

From what I read, they are working on it.

Business is going to do whatever it needs to do, and go wherever it needs to go to make money, which is why so many of them manufacture overseas.

And making money is what they are in business to do.

You and others may have noted that Cal Coolidge (Cal "Coolodge" may have, for all anyone knows or knows who the hell Cal Coolodge is) did NOT say the same thing you said. He did NOT say making money is what anyone is in business to do and many would argue that the business of any human beings and therefore, their nation, is to make a living.

Bernie Madoff was "in the business " of "making money" and a living, too. So has/is every crook that stole/looks to steal something from others, to enrich themselves, whether it be "money" or some perverted sexual gratification or undue power over others. I believe you and others who seem to think selling one's soul or the souls of others for "money" is a "necessary evil" would disagree with you as there are plenty of (perhaps even MORE) examples, where people make money and live their lives without having to screw, rip off, rule over or traumatize others for life, in order to do so.

Who knows, there still may be a Catholic or any other sort of Christian out there that still believes in passages from the Bible and their metaphoric meaning, INSTEAD of believing the opposite, while trying to pose as one who "believes", while their actions do NOT reflect their claims. I know the majority of those I run into, seem to align their beliefs with their actions, for all those that do not. Those that do not, seem to be the most vocal about denying there is anything wrong going on.

Trump says we need a Republican in office. Birds of a feather.

The Catholic Church has gone too far to turn back. The same is happening with Evangelicals who will back anyone as long as they are right wing, never mind the morals.

    What would Jesus say?

Many businesses think making money is more important than all that stuff.

They go as far as the law allows, and sometimes farther than the law allows.

That's not new and it's not gonna change...

    Don't know.

I do know what Obama said.

He said we "punish our enemies" and "reward our friends".

Both sides do that, of course...

You might ask them what did Teddy Roosevelt did, too.

Funny, how they manage to drag out obsolete sayings, but ignore what the really great Republicanss did for the country. Teddy and Ike come to mind.keep in mind I remember Ike. He could have run in either party. They would not touch the Trumpís , McConnellís,Ryanís with a ten foot pole.

Republicans had some self respect back then. So did the Churches. Now,we are flooded with the Pat Robertsonís, Franklyn Grahamís, so many TV Evangelicals, who live like Kings and Queens, a corrupt Vatican that even a decent Pope can not tame.
    Thanks from Friday13
