Not even in the least. If you have the ability to help others without causing anyone to suffer a horrific death, that's generally the preferred method.

Isn't self-sacrifice the hallmark of love? That is how I understand it and, judging from hollywood regularly spews out, that is how most people understand it as well.

God is love and the only 'reward' for god here is to manifest that love.

What do you want me to say?

The crucifixion is a mystery. Praying the rosary everyday in catholic school since grade school (sorrowful mysteries every tuesdays and fridays) couldn't stress this point enough. Most of the time, I just mouth the words. But on very rare occasions, I actually contemplate on them, which is the point of the exercise to begin with -- to try and understand these mysteries in relation to your life.

How do you sacrifice yourself knowing you can't die?

Self-sacrifice that involves physical mutilation does not represent rational human behavior.

    You cannot.

That said, explaining the underlying concept of "blood sacrifice" requires us to throw up our hands and resort to "mystery" again, because it makes no sense to any rational person.

What? By torturing and executing your son only to make him into a zombie a few days later in order to forgive the sins of people who cannot even grasp the lack of logic in the exercise?

It's not "self-sacrifice" if you're still walking around afterwards. For Jesus, death wasn't an sacrifice; it was a technicality.

Really? People do it all the time. Fire fighters, policemen, soldiers -- they risk life and limb for the sake of the common good. That is not rational behavior?
