WTF kind of church does something this?

A church in northeast Pennsylvania is telling couples to bring their semi-automatic rifles to a blessing ceremony next week. The event is meant to give couples an opportunity "to show their willingness to defend their familiars, communities and nation," The Times-Tribune in Scranton reported.

It will take place at the World Peace and Unification Sanctuary in Newfoundland, Pa., on Wednesday.

“All of the weapons in the ceremony will be checked to make sure they are unloaded, with a zip tie so that no bullets can be inserted,” Sanctuary Church president Richard Panzer said in an email, according to the The Times-Tribune.

    Good grief.

sure, encourage people to bring their guns to church, so they can get blessed.. while at the same time tell them that you don't trust them to carry a loaded gun. LOL. Religion and gun nutters, when combined, they're even more crazy.

This is so stupid. Besides the absurd concept of blessing a gun, the church says, "to show their willingness to defend their familiars, communities and nation," and presumably their church since it's not unheard of that mass shootings take place in churches, but they don't trust these people enough to load these weapons and they insist they be tied off so they can't be fire. It's so dumb on a couple of levels.

Sorry, you're absolutely right, but I'm spoiling it.

The pastor of the church in question is Hyung Jin Moon. His father and self-proclaimed messiah (Sun Myung Moon) founded the Unification Church in the 1970s. Adherents were colloquially known as "Moonies."

The absurd concept of blessing a gun? Apparently, there is nothing absurd about blessing a weapon of war:

On December 3, 2016 USS Colorado (SSN 788) was Christened by Ship's Sponsor, Annie Mabus, in ceremonies at General Dynamics Electric Boat Shipyard in Groton, Connecticut. . . After a blessing by Father Anthony Dinoto, the ceremony concluded with the breaking of the bottle of sparkling wine with the traditional words "In the name of the United States, I Christen thee Colorado. May God bless her and all who sail in her."

The moonies claim rifles are the "rod of steel" which is apparently referenced in the bible.

They (he?) also own the Washington Times.

The school next door was shut down and evacuated during the ceremony.
