    Speaking in tongues

Yeah kid, you're really saying something there. You're full of the holy spirit, along with other things, as well.
Why do Xians do this? They are not saying anything but gibberish. It's the Xian faith distilled to its most basic level of stupid...the purest form. I think this is a Xian only phenom, I hate to think there are other faiths this dumb. Do they really think they are making sense, and what drug do they commonly take to make them think this?

I once worked with a very religious dude. He told me of speaking in tongues. I told him it was bullshit. He cried. Literally. My proudest moment.

Almost. The concept does predate Xianity, and is practiced a little bit outside of Xianity. But on the whole, no one else really does this.

That is a good thing. I simply don't have the patience to deal with people like that. I wouldn't last five seconds once they started that crap if I was in a church that featured this "talk".

Speaking in tongues boils down to speaking in gibberish. Only once is there a reference in the bible of followers actually being gifted with the ability to speak actual real languages and even then it is not clear as one man spoke to everyone but the listeners hearing the words in their own language. "every man heard them speak in his own language" and wondered "how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?"

The Greek expression (in various forms) appears in the New Testament in the books of Acts and First Corinthians. In Acts 2, the followers of Christ receive the Holy Spirit and speak in the languages of at least fifteen countries or ethnic groups.

Cessationists believe that all the miraculous gifts of the Holy Spirit ceased to occur early in Christian history, and therefore that the speaking in tongues practised today is simply the utterance of meaningless syllables. It is neither xenoglossia nor miraculous, but rather learned behavior, possibly self-induced. These believe that what the New Testament described as "speaking in tongues" was xenoglossia, a miraculous spiritual gift through which the speaker could communicate in natural languages not previously studied.
Proponents of each viewpoint use the biblical writings and historical arguments to support their positions.

So, in the Bible, it's kind of like how the TARDIS translates for anyone near it?

Yes. That's how they explain people from all over the world being able to talk to aliens. It's also why everyone has a British accent on the show.

Someone once tried to convince me that they were ancient dialects long forgotten. This individual didn't know I was educated in ancient languages (Indo-European roots) and knew the tell tale signs of a language or dialect as opposed to utter drivel.

When I saw this in the flesh it was accompanied by rolling around on the floor ~ quite a spectacle!

However, I still love the snake handlers and their Darwinian mortality rate the most.

Most don't. I only saw it once when my Grandma died. The pastor who was conducting her funeral spoke like this but it was mixed in with the rest of the sermon. I had no clue what that was and asked my Mom and she explained that people who can do this are speaking directly to God. It was not a spectacle like the video. LOL As far as snakes, never saw that, but it is denounced in most Christian churches. They feel it is tempting God and putting yourself in harms way forcing a reaction. I heard that it is fake anyway...if you hold the snake correctly around its head paralyzing the muscle so the snake can't strike. Both of those are practiced in very strict baptist churches, where women only wear dresses, never cut their hair, etc.

All religions have their symbolic shows of faith. You will like this story....I invited my Muslim girlfriend on a road trip with my friends. We were going to a outlet mall in PA, about a 2 hour drive. When stopped at a rest area, a busload of Orthodox Jews were praying to a wall with a lot of movement and it was very loud. She NEVER goes out with us on our girls trips or nights out and was traumatized. Refused to get out of the car. She also hates Jewish people with a passion. We avoid the subject entirely because she does not have that "live and let live" spirit in her. There must have been 50-60 of them praying right next to the women's bathroom. My other friends were WTF...and had never seen that before and they were afraid to leave the car. I had seen this many times working at Mt Sinai and the hospital had a garden set up where the Orthodox Jews could pray. I did end up sniping at my Muslim friend when she was going off about this...I reminded her of when she was my student and the times I allowed her to leave class and found a empty room where she could pray. To this day, she has never gone on a girls trip with us again.

Speaking in tongues and snakes are only practiced in the most primitive of Christianity. Their churches are very small with only about 5 or 6 members. Snake handling is actually illegal in some States. People who practice this live a very strict spiritual life, similar to devout Muslims and Orthodox Jews. Many can't live by the rules and practice and this is why you see so many different denominations in Christianity.
