During the 1980s the United States was supporting future terrorists against the Soviet Union in Afghanistan. We should have allowed the Soviets to win in Afghanistan. That way with the breakup of the Soviet Union Afghanistan might have become a democracy and the Soviets might have killed Osama bin Laden in their March to victory. Instead our fear mongering government was busy antagonizing the Soviets when working together may have solved a whole host of future problems. See what cooperation can bring?

The Soviets would have lost regardless of US assistance so in that respect your hypothesis is flawed.

It was a big mistake for us to help arm the mujahideen. Now the soviets are going against us in Iraq by arming the iranians.
