End of Days in May? Christian group spreads word

RALEIGH, N.C. -- If there had been time, Marie Exley would have liked to start a family. Instead, the 32-year-old Army veteran has less than six months left, which she'll spend spreading a stark warning: Judgment Day is almost here.

Exley is part of a movement of Christians loosely organized by radio broadcasts and websites, independent of churches and convinced by their reading of the Bible that the end of the world will begin May 21, 2011.

To get the word out, they're using billboards and bus stop benches, traveling caravans of RVs and volunteers passing out pamphlets on street corners. Cities from Bridgeport, Conn., to Little Rock, Ark., now have billboards with the ominous message, and mission groups are traveling through Latin America and Africa to spread the news outside the U.S.

"A lot of people might think, 'The end's coming, let's go party,'" said Exley, a veteran of two deployments in Iraq. "But we're commanded by God to warn people. I wish I could just be like everybody else, but it's so much better to know that when the end comes, you'll be safe."

If I were a soldier I wouldn't want to be deployed with her come April. She thinks the world will end in May, not the kind of person I want covering my back in a firefight.

At least the Mayans had the decency to die before they could be proven wrong.

It's the only way to save the Social Security System--get rid of the boomer generation before they can retire!

I wouldn't take the Mayan calender that seriously, it is more likely they lost their stone carver after reaching Dec.~23 2012......

On New Years Day, my family and I were in downtown Philadelphia. Our primary destination was the Franklin Institute (science museum), but we decided to check out the annual New Years' Mummers Parade while we were in the neighborhood.

These loons decided to take advantage of the gathered crowds to advance their own cause, which is just as silly as the Mummers, but not nearly as fun and colorful. Picture courtesy of yours truly.

The truth is that the Mayan calendar ends at that point because the designers ran out of digits, and saw no point in taking it further. It would be valid to compare it to the monumental non-event that takes place when your car's odometer hits one-million miles, resetting all the digits to zero. Sure, it provides some with an empty thrill, but there's really no significance to the event.

The Mayans have no prophesies whatsoever concerning Dec. 23, 2012.
