Portland OR Mayor "Cancels Trump Rally" Over Unrest Fears

Where the fuck are American politicians getting their 1st amendment knowledge lately?

    The bottom of Crackerjack boxes?

The mayor of Portland, Oregon, on Monday urged U.S. officials and organizers to cancel a “Trump Free Speech Rally” and other similar events, saying they are inappropriate and could be dangerous after two men were stabbed to death on a train as they tried to help a pair of young women targeted by an anti-Muslim tirade.

Mayor Ted Wheeler said he hopes the victims will inspire “changes in the political dialogue in this country.”

It comes amid a wider debate in the U.S. about the First Amendment, often in liberal cities like Portland and Berkeley, California, and on college campuses, where violent protests between far-right and far-left protesters have derailed appearances by contentious figures.

The government has NO RIGHT WHATSOEVER to oppress citizens IN ADVANCE, because the government fears "unrest" may break out if citizens exercise their free speech rights.

(Emergencies, like Katrina, and wartime, like Pearl Harbor, are exceptions.)

Ask the POTUS to send in the National Guard, Mayor.

    This is America.

The protestors can still show up and exercise their rights, they just won't have anyone to direct their hate to.

The first amendment doesn't give people the right to harass other people and cause violence.

Fine, I guess bullying in school should be allowed under the first amendment then.

    What a ridiculous argument.

Schoolchildren are (1) in at least partial state custody, as attendance is compulsory and (2) vulnerable, deserving of protecting.

"Bullying" and "harassment" are actual words, with actual definitions.

"Rude" behavior at a protest is protected by the first amendment, and often has civic value even when the state attempts to criminalize it. I have never even heard of a case where the protesters and counter-protesters knew one another IRL, and that protest inspired a subsequent campaign of harassment, bullying or stalking by any of them against another.

Maybe the mayor needs to be told that the Portland murderer was actually a Bernie supporter.

No, it does not. When you start harassing others, stopping people, impeding traffic, it isn't a free speech protected rally but a mob.

THE PORTLAND MURDER SAID THIS ON HIS FACE BOOK PAGE:

"If Donald Trump is the Next Hitler then I am joining his SS to put an end to Monotheist Question. All Zionist Jews, All Christians who do not follow Christ's teaching of Love, Charity, and Forgiveness And All Jihadi Muslims are going to Madagascar or the Ovens/FEMA Camps!!! Does this make me a fascist!!!"

And so on: "If you support Israel for Zionist homeland for Jews then you should also support Cascadia as a White homeland for whites only racists…"

    "I'm not Anti-Semitic. I'm Anti-Zionist and Anti-Monotheist."

The Man Accused of MAX Double Murder Is a Portland White Supremacist Who Delivered Nazi Salutes and Racial Slurs at a "Free Speech" Rally Last Month - Willamette Week

He called President Donald Trump the antichrist, but meant it as a compliment.
