Benghazi: Before the CIA talking points

Here is the question I would like to see answered by the inquiry.

The CIA and the White House started baking talking points on the 14th (9/14/2012). Who baked whom and how has been the focus of most discussions.

However, the White House and the Media were linking the attacks to the internet video and a spontaneous demonstration 2 days earlier and many reports were unattributed. It was reported as a fact, not a theory and it was repeated again and again. But not by everyone. So let's look for reports from 9/12 and 9/13 that did attribute that idea.

First, I would like to establish that the White House Talking points came out immediately. This makes pinning down what occurred the night of the attacks essential.

Hillary?s Unconscionable Benghazi Lie | National Review Online

At 10:32 on the night of the attack, Secretary Clinton issued a statement deploring violence in response to “inflammatory material posted on the Internet.” In the days that followed, the president and his spokesman repeatedly invoked the supposedly offensive video as the cause of the attack.

Here are more reports of the immediacy of the talking points. This report attributes sources. These are bolded. In the first case, unnamed witnesses are blamed. Since we now know there were no protests, this unnamed source can be considered unreliable. The second source is named "Wants al-Sharef." His report has also been disproved. Please note that I heard multiple CBS radio reports that pushed the linkage without attribution.

Correction, Please! - The New American

A CNN article published on September 12, the day after the deadly attack on a U.S. mission in Libya, claimed that "protesters angry about an online film considered offensive to Islam " had killed U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans. Citing unidentified "witnesses," the piece went on to allege that there were angry demonstrators protesting outside what CNN described as the "U.S. Consulate" in Benghazi. "Some have sought to justify this vicious behavior as a response to inflammatory material posted on the Internet," Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was quoted as saying. "The United States deplores any intentional effort to denigrate the religious beliefs of others. Our commitment to religious tolerance goes back to the very beginning of our nation." However, Clinton continued, "there is never any justification for violent acts of this kind."

Item: The Associated Press and CBS News also reported on September 12 that the deadly military-style attack actually began as a simple protest by some disgruntled locals upset about the YouTube film. "Both incidents were sparked by hardline Muslims protesting a film made in the U.S. which insults the Muslim prophet Muhammad," the report claimed, referring to the attack in Benghazi and the anti-American demonstration at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo on the same day. "Wants al-Sharef, a Libyan Interior Ministry official in Benghazi, said the four Americans were killed when the angry mob, which gathered to protest a U.S.-made film that ridicules Islam's Prophet Muhammad, fired guns and burned down the U.S. consulate in Benghazi," CBS reported.

US envoy dies in Benghazi consulate attack - Africa - Al Jazeera English

This Al Jazeera report is far more detailed and is also dated 9/12/2012. It also mentions Wanis al-Sharif. It also quotes varying sources for what occurred. This is a good example of a more balanced approach. It poses several theories and quotes different sources to explain the attack. Although the overall article blames the video and mentions protests, opposite views are also quoted.

An armed mob attacked and set fire to the consulate building during a protest against an amateur film deemed offensive to Islam's prophet, Muhammad, after similar protests in Egypt's capital.
Libyan Deputy Interior Minister Wanis al-Sharif blamed loyalists of former Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi for the attack, while stressing that the United States should have removed its personnel from the country when news of the film's release broke.
Sharif cited protests that broke out earlier this summer when al-Qaeda second-in-command and Libyan citizen Abu Yahya al-Libi was killed in a US drone strike in Pakistan. On Tuesday, in a little-noticed development, al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri publicly confirmed Libi's death.
Quilliam, an British think tank that aims to oppose Muslim extremism, asserted on Wednesday that the attack on the consulate was not part of a protest but a "planned terrorist assault" to avenge Libi's death.

Quilliam said that the evidence pointing to such a conclusion came from witness statements that those outside the consulate were carrying RPGs and that the assault came in two apparently calculated waves, the second of which targeted the Americans after they had fled the consulate for a safe house
Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki was quoted as describing the Benghazi attack as a "terrorist act

What the fuck difference does it make? How much money is the right going to waste talking about it? If the admin deliberately used this excuse because they thought it was politically expedient to do so what is going to happen? Nothing. If they did not, what is going to happen? Nothing. What the fuck are they trying to prove and what happens if they do? Nothing.

It's funny the right seems to think the admin used Benghazi to help them politically yet they are doing the same damn thing now only 10 times worse. Every dime or moment they spend rehashing this bullshit is a complete waste of taxpayer money, haven't they something better to do?

Having made no progress in two years, based on what they now call "the CIA talking points", the RWNJ conspiracy has changed tack and will now supply it's own fresh talking points. Rinse and repeat, and repeat, and repeat.....

And now a domestic source from 9/12/2012. Please note that the report repeats the video linkage, but also mentions two other theories for the causation of the attack (bolded).

WDTV.COM 5 News: U.S. Ambassador, 3 Others Killed in Libya

Wanis al-Sharef, a Libyan Interior Ministry official in Benghazi, said the four Americans were killed when the angry mob, which gathered to protest a U.S.-made film that ridicules Islam's Prophet Muhammad, fired guns and burned down the U.S. consulate in Benghazi.
According to al-Sharef, the angry mob stormed the consulate after the U.S. troops who responded fired rounds into the air to try and disperse the crowd. Al-Sharef said there had been threats that Islamic militants might try to take revenge for the death of al Qaeda's No. 2 commander Abu Yahya al-Libi, who was killed in a U.S. drone strike in Pakistan in June, and he said the U.S. consulate should have been better protected.

Here's a 9/13/2012 piece that attributes an eyewitness. Please note that he does not confirm the talking points baked on 9/14/2012 (according to some) by the CIA.

BENGHAZI, Libya: No protest before Benghazi attack, wounded Libyan guard says | Middle East | McClatchy DC

A Libyan security guard who said he was at the U.S. consulate here when it was attacked Tuesday night has provided new evidence that the assault on the compound that left four Americans dead, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya, was a planned attack by armed Islamists and not the outgrowth of a protest over an online video that mocks Islam and its founder, the Prophet Muhammad.

The guard, interviewed Thursday in the hospital where he is being treated for five shrapnel wounds in one leg and two bullet wounds in the other, said that the consulate area was quiet – “there wasn’t a single ant outside,” he said – until about 9:35 p.m., when as many as 125 armed men descended on the compound from all directions.

So, all you who are passionate about getting it right.

How can the press spend 6 weeks posing various theories to explain a missing jet, but just roll over and accept the White House cherry picking and promotion of a single theory to explain the death of 4 Americans?

Please note that not one of the above quotes are from Fox News (though I will mention that the Bair report of 10/12/2012 does mention elements of these reports, including the video).
